The Counselor
When "The Counselor" was released last fall, it was an intriguing conundrum: how had Ridley Scott, the one-time bad boy auteur behind "Blade Runner" and "Alien," taken the first original screenplay by legendary American author Cormac McCarthy (of "No Country for Old Men" and "The Road" fame), and turned in something so vacant and bizarre? We puzzled over this at the time, both in our review and in comparing the final version to the lengthier, filthier, more philosophically-minded screenplay. With the recent release of the Blu-ray, not only do we get a more satisfying cut of the movie, but its accompanying commentary provides a shockingly honest and insightful glimpse into who Scott is as a filmmaker today.

Steven Spielberg's Next Could Be 'Montezuma' With Javier Bardem, Based On Script By 'Spartacus' Writer Dalton Trumbo

For a guy as prolific as Steven Spielberg tends to be, 2013 was a curious year for the filmmaker. Following "Lincoln," the director had long been planning to make "Robopocalypse," but he shelved the project in January, citing that the script needed more work. He then lined up "American Sniper" with Bradley Cooper slated to star, only to drop out of that too, with Clint Eastwood taking over the director's chair. And while Spielberg as plethora of producing projects on the go (including Stanley Kubrick's vision of "Napoleon" with Baz Luhrmann to helm), it's not certain what he'll direct next. But another option has come to the table.

A Peter Pan origin story movie? Yawn. Even with Joe Wright attached to direct, "Pan" seems like yet another big studio play at a franchise, chasing a property and project that seems only to exist for nostalgia. But consider us now interested thanks to this latest development.

Brad Pitt, The Counselor
Yep, it was in 3,336 theaters, stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz (among myriad other names), was directed by Ridley Scott and written by celebrated American author Cormac McCarthy, but 20th Century Fox's "The Counselor" flopped despite all that star power. We can't say we're totally surprised. Sure, it had the now infamous catfish scene, cheetahs, a terribly awful (or terribly good) Cameron Diaz as an evil black widow with cheetah tattoos, drug deals, beheadings, and more sordidness, but Scott's film—a blisteringly dark, acidic poem about fate, greed and the way we communicate—was just too arty and talky for mainstream audiences (and perhaps too mainstream for the arthouse).

The Counselor
Michael Fassbender is sexy like a shark, and sleek as a sports car. His chin is chiseled and hard, forever confident, but his smile is subterranean, hiding secrets we could never guess. As compelling an actor he is, perhaps there’s almost too much depth to this classically pretty face, one that cannot help but come across as predatory, salacious. He’s an unlikely choice to be a wronged man in the middle of a suspense thriller, and yet here he is, apparently meant to be likable and relatable at the center of Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy’s reptilian “The Counselor.”

The Counselor
If you still need a Halloween costume idea then might we suggest going as Javier Bardem in "The Counselor"? From the loud hair to the even louder shirts, his role as Reiner in the Cormac McCarthy penned thriller looks like one for the ages, or at the very least for this weekend.

The Counselor
With just over a week to go before it hits theaters, Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" is still kind of a big, fat question mark. Even with the steady promotional push, which has included clips and previews of the soundtrack (click here if you missed it yesterday), what kind of movie we're in for is still a bit up in the air. An Oscar caliber, dark drama like "No Country For Old Men"? A sizzling piece of noir pulp? Something in between? We still don't know but perhaps these new images will help.

The Counselor, Michael Fassbender
One of the pleasures to be had from Ridley Scott's upcoming thriller "The Counselor," we're assuming, is watching Michael Fassbender squirm. The film, based on the first original screenplay from "No Country for Old Men" author Cormac McCarthy, concerns a lawyer (Fassbender) who gets involved in drug trafficking and, we're assuming, has to try and extract himself without winding up very, very dead. In a new clip we watch Fassbender talking with Javier Bardem, with a fake tan and hypnotically spiky plume of hair, about just how bad his situation has gotten. Watch it below.

Brad Pitt, The Counselor
When it comes to "The Counselor," Ridley Scott's new movie that's based on "No Country for Old Men" author Cormac McCarthy's first original screenplay, there seems to be no middle ground: it's either going to be amazing or utterly unwatchable. We've watched, in a kind of hushed fascination, as each new trailer and image has debuted from the movie: will this all jell into something rich and dazzling, like the Ridley Scott of yore, or will it be a spectacular disaster, like an air show crash or "A Good Year." With the movie's October release date fast approaching, we'll know soon enough. And a handful of new images, plus a new poster, continue our wide-eyed appreciation.
