You gotta admire Ron Howard and producing partner Brian Grazer for keeping the fight alive for their hugely ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower." Even though Universal balked on the project last summer, the pair kept developing and shopping the project, with Grazer revealing they had reduced the budget and that HBO was lining up to take on the TV portion of the sprawling franchise. Then, this spring, it was revealed that Warner Bros. were kicking the tires on the whole thing, which made sense given that the parent company owns HBO as well. And it appears as if everything is continuing to move forward. But with a pretty big change.

Yeah, we know, these two movies go together like oil and water. One is an auteur-driven entry in a beloved franchise that has spanned generations, while the other is another indistinguishable addition to a series of films that has managed to beat out most people's expectations for its longevity. But they are both being released by Sony, so there's that.

Now that we're coming to the end of summer blockbuster season, many eyes are turning towards the fall line-up, and while there's the usual selection of prestige fare there, we're not exactly going to be starving for blockbusters. "The Hobbit," "Jack Reacher," "Breaking Dawn Pt. 2" -- all films with the potential to be huge without necessarily troubling Academy voters. But one of the most anticipated of all is "Skyfall," the 23rd official James Bond film, which hits in November.

Just when you think studios are gonna zig, they zag. After a weekend in which audiences rejected "John Carter" and a year in which studios were tightening their belts and dropping expensive and potentially risky projects, one of the biggest of those aborted efforts may be kicking back to life.

Ever since its surprise announcement a month or so back, "The Counselor," the first script written directly for the screen by Pulitzer Prize-winner Cormac McCarthy, author of "No Country For Old Men" and "The Road," has been one of the hottest projects in Hollywood. Swiftly snapped up by the producers of "The Road," the film soon had Ridley Scott attached to direct, and man-of-the-moment Michael Fassbender locked into the lead role, an attorney who gets way over their head in the drugs trade.

Could Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt be teaming on Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" before they work on "Twelve Years A Slave"? If everything shakes out, that could very well be the case.
