Predator
Fans of the "Predator" series will no doubt know that not only was the original design of the iconic extraterrestrial monster lacking in the terrifying department—the original head look had yellow eyes and lacked the famous mandible mouth—but no less than the Muscles from Brussels himself was tipped to be the man inside the rubber suit. Of course, the match-up between Jean-Claude Van Damme and Arnold Schwarzenegger never came to be and an interview with FX legend Steve Johnson that surfaced online gives us some insight on how we missed on what could have been a momentous event in 80s pop culture.

Enemies Closer
Why are action movies ashamed to be action movies? It’s as if one day, Hollywood figured they could teach actors how to kick better than they could teach martial artists how to act, turning a legion of would-be dramatic leading men into shit-kickers. The era of Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Willis is over, replaced by the legion of Harry Potters and Percy Jacksons who can stand still as computer generated effects fly from their hands, or the Jason Bournes who can flail and wave their arms around as the camera shakes to create the illusion of violence. In that spirit, there is this weekend’s “Enemies Closer,” which twenty years ago would have starred Jean-Claude Van Damme. The good news is, he’s still in it. The bad news: the movie stars Tom Everett Scott.

Welcome To The Jungle Jean-Claude Van Damme
By now you’ve likely seen the splits-tastic Jean-Claude Van Damme Volvo spot and the just-as-amusing Channing Tatum parody that it inspired. However, one matter that may have come up while watching is simply Van Damme’s varied cinematic output. Recently, “JCVD” and “Universal Soldier: Regeneration” have shown a performer willing to reach for some fantastically bizarre, self-aware moments, but now a new film hopes to take that self-parody to a new level, and we’ve got the trailer and a few clips to gauge its early promise.

First Look At Jean-Claude Van Damme In 'Swelter'

Jean-Claude Van Damme Swelter
When he's not doing epic splits, Jean-Claude Van Damme is also making movies, and his latest, "Swelter," might get you hot under the collar. And certainly the heat is coming off this first image. He stars alongside Alfred Molina, Lennie James, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Freya Tingley in the thriller which has just left the American Film Market having pretty much sold out around the world. Enemies Closer Jean Claude Van Damme Tom Everett Scott
There are two things that can be said about the trailer for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s “Enemies Closer.” First of all, his hair is absolutely fabulous, somehow managing to perfectly capture the essence of his smug-crazy-drug dealer character. Secondly, it has Orlando Jones and that’s notable for the fact that we haven’t seen Orlando Jones in years. (Those Sprite commercials used to light up our lives, it’s a shame he hasn’t been as prolific as we thought he’d be.) But don't take our word for it, journey down below to check out the incredible trailer for “Enemies Closer.”

The first “Universal Soldier,” a tacky studio star vehicle that introduced us to director Roland Emmerich, debuted to the public as a Clinton-era signifier. It featured two resurrected soldiers eternally at war, products of a system that would allow them to kill and kill again over the years, brought back to be the new world‘s attack dog heroes. An ending to that film assured us that these war-like tendencies could be either deprogrammed or eliminated entirely, as one heroic fighter (Luc Deveraux, as played by Jean-Claude Van Damme) learned to love, and one villainous antagonist (Andrew Scott, as played by Dolph Lundgren) learned to accept dismemberment. Context was the key, context which was essentially eliminated in two dirt-cheap cable sequels and a quickie theatrical follow-up, but not direct-to-DVD installment, “Universal Soldier: Regeneration.”

Review: Jean-Claude Van Damme Shines In The Moronically Irresistible Entertainment Of ‘Expendables 2’

“The Expendables 2” is one of the very few films that gets better as it gets dumber. Serviceably directed, horribly written and barely acted at all except for a standout performance by (of all people) Jean-Claude Van Damme, it mostly delivers in the way that the original failed to, which is by enabling action stars to charm their way through an incredibly hackneyed and conventional storyline. Nevertheless an irresistibly fun alternative to the so-called grown-up fare that has attempted to replace the escapism of '80s and ‘90s blockbusters, “The Expendables 2” offers a welcome roundup of action stars who simultaneously – and satisfyingly – celebrate and send up their former glories.

On June 12th, 1987, audiences around the country got their first look at that (to borrow one of the more quotable bits from the movie) ugly motherfucker that is "Predator." It heralded a number of promising new stars – most notably Arnold Schwarzenegger finally getting a bona fide blockbuster after sleeper hits like "The Terminator" and "Conan The Barbarian" – and director John McTiernan would emerge as one of the freshest, most stylish voices in action filmmaking since John Ford.
