"Independence Day" (1996)
Earlier this summer, "White House Down" director Roland Emmerich said that Will Smith would most likely not be back for "Independence Day 2," the big budget sequel to his beloved sci-fi flick. But what a difference a few months and a notoriously costly flop make. Now Emmerich has said that Smith might return for the sequel as the cigar-chomping pilot from the original film and not, say, his twin brother. Anyone else now keenly excited about "Independence Day 2: The Legend of Steve Hiller's Gold?"

There are lots of movies coming this fall, dripping with heavy drama and intense themes, but sometimes you just need to escape. And from the first glances at "Notting Hill" and "Venus" director Roger Michell's "Le Week-End," this could be exactly the kind of feel-good medicine audiences will go for. A romance with a couple of older charmers set in Paris? It almost sounds a bit too on the nose, and certainly the first trailer and clip aren't subtle, but if brewed right it could be a worthwhile concoction.

As Roland Emmerich has been making the press rounds for the upcoming "White House Down," the director has been creating some buzz around the upcoming "Independence Day 2," sequel to the 1996 mega-blockbuster. To the disappointment of many (though admittedly less than before "After Earth"), Emmerich revealed this past weekend, "Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name." This left all '90s nostalgists pondering and panting about who else will or won't sign on for "Independence Day 2."

Jurassic Park
This week marks the 20th (!) anniversary of "Jurassic Park," Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the Michael Crichton best-seller that would go on to become (at the time) the highest grossing movie of all time and a true technological breakthrough that would influence the way movies are made and exhibited to this very day (it was the first movie with a fully digital theatrical soundtrack). The movie is so ingrained in the hearts and minds of a certain generation that the 3D rerelease felt redundant – there are some of us who could easily act out every moment from the movie from memory. It's hard to even imagine but there were several, wildly different variations on "Jurassic Park" that almost made it to the screen, and we're here to dig those up like a long forgotten mosquito inside chunk of amber, dust them off, use the blood from inside the mosquito, and resurrect these versions of "Jurassic Park." Welcome to the "Jurassic Park" you've never seen.

We really don’t get to see enough of Jeff Goldblum any more. The actor’s last three big-screen appearances were in small roles, in “Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie,” “Morning Glory” and “The Switch,” and that’s just not enough to help sate our Goldblum cravings. That’s why we’re looking forward as much as we are to seeing Goldblum let loose in Wes Anderson’s next movie, “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” He’ll line up alongside regular Anderson collaborators Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson, as well as some Anderson newbs in Jude Law, Ralph Fiennes and Saorise Ronan.

"Moonrise Kingdom" not only earned Wes Anderson some of the best reviews in years, but has also done extremely well in limited release, where it's pulled in $37 million worldwide thus far and has been cracking the top ten domestically, even though it's in less than 900 theaters. And it seems he's very eager to get back behind the cameras.

Memo to the Academy: Next year, you might want to get the writing staff of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to write jokes for the show, because this nine-minute bit is funnier than anything that happened at the Oscars last night.
