Well, you knew something had to break. After his Best Acting Oscar nomination for "The Hurt Locker," Jeremy Renner's stock in the star market rose astronomically and he attached himself to several tentpoles ("Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" being the biggest) and even flirted with the first iteration of Paul Thomas Anderson's Scientology project. But something in his schedule had to give and that's become an indie called “Better Living Through Chemistry.”

“Why?” will echo through your head if you’re a fan of the 1981 “Arthur” starring Dudley Moore as you watch this useless remake. The original won a shiny pair of Oscars and is considered a classic, but apparently Warner Bros. thought it needed to be remade for contemporary audiences. But the larger philosophical question soon fades in favor of a strictly personal one: “Why me?” Though it has fleeting funny moments, this Russell Brand vehicle is a sputtering Pinto that surprises more when it runs well than when it lurches to a stop.

So just yesterday, it was reported that Jennifer Garner had closed up a deal with Disney to star in a revamp of Agatha Christie's famed sleuth Miss Marple. Much to the dismay of fans of the author, these new film versions seemingly would keep the name only to change the spinster detective to a young, crime-busting woman in her 30s or 40s. Whether or not Garner would wear an accent was undisclosed at the time. Anyway, 24 hours later, it looks like it might not be signed, sealed and delivered just yet.

It's possibly just because the rest of the ceremony was such a painful, dull slog, but the presentation of Best Foreign Language Film by Helen Mirren and Russell Brand was one of the few lively points of this year's Oscars, with some suggesting on the night that the duo would make better hosts next year than James Franco and Anne Hathaway, although it could also be argued that the Pixar lamp and the rotting corpse of David Niven would have more chemistry as hosts than Franco & Hathaway.

Cast Already Includes Jeremy Renner & Jennifer GarnerThe European Film Market in Berlin is in full swing this weekend and film deals are happening left, right and center. A lot of times these attachments and or pre-attachments are made to attract and or entice financiers and don't always come to fruition, but we'll give this one the benefit of the doubt.

Lead roles have been cast in Adrian Lyne's adaptation of Tawni O'Dell's "Back Roads," a novel about a young man in rural Pennsylvania trying to care for his three younger sisters after his mother goes to jail. Andrew Garfield is attached to play the lead role of Harley with Jennifer Garner and Marcia Gay Harden in supporting roles. Garner will play a neighbor and love interest for Garfield, with Harden taking on the role of court-appointed therapist to Garfield. Lyne co-wrote the screenplay with O'Dell and is all set to turn the Oprah's Book Club novel into a film for Infinity Media. Many young actresses are being considered to play Garfield's sisters; in the book, the girls are 15, 12 and 6. Hailee Steinfeld and Elle Fanning, anyone?

Never let it be said that we don't know how to pick 'em. Only a few weeks back, we picked our ten tips for actors to watch in the near future, and one of them was Australian Joel Edgerton, of "Animal Kingdom." We wrote that "Edgerton could find himself eclipsing his country-mate [Sam] Worthington on the A-list." While we're not quite there yet, Edgerton's just put himself well on the way by landing one of the most sought-after male leads in recent memory.
