The Best Quotes of 2013
2013, we’re not quite done with you yet. To close off our coverage of the year gone by, we wanted to hand over the mic to the actors, directors and other film professionals who made waves, headlines, faux pas, announcements, pronouncements or funny gags throughout the year. And we’re changing up the format this time out, scouring the whole internet and not just our own archives for these little nuggets, mainly because we’re fairly sure you’ve all avidly consumed, and committed to memory every word of each of the 200-odd interviews we ran in 2013, and we’d be preaching to the choir.

American Hustle Louis C.K.
There is no such thing as a small role, the old saying goes, and one of the many pleasures to be found in David O. Russell's awards season contender "American Hustle," is Louis C.K.'s turn as Stoddard Thorsen, the supervisor to Bradley Cooper's slowly unraveling FBI agent Richie DiMaso. Throughout the film, the two come head-to-head, bickering over the scope and reach of their operation, and their meetings are usually finished by Stoddard sharing a new portion of an ice fishing story which Richie keeps trying to guess the end of. In the movie, neither the audience nor Richie manage to hear the punchline, but it has finally been revealed.

Inside Llweyn Davis
Could "Inside Llewyn Davis" have a few more songs left in its awards season campaign? After a week that left its Oscar prospects in serious question, after being shut out by both the PGA and WGA nominations, the latest from the Coens has scored some big honors at the National Society Of Film Critics Awards.

American Hustle
While "The Wolf Of Wall Street" and "American Hustle" can be loosely linked by their conman centered stories, and voiceover driven narratives, focused on an ensemble of players doing bad things, the similarities end there. Where Martin Scorsese's picture goes headlong into the extremes of bad behaviour, David O. Russell's film is more concerned on the emotional fallout and toll. It makes for a different (and arguably) far more richer and satisfying experience. And while we'll leave that debate for the comments section, here's a reminder that "American Hustle" has it's own wild side.

While Hollywood's current formula is focused on the lucrative model of making sequels and reboots, the always difficult to decipher question is figuring who to lead these valuable properties. And while the industry continues to present more complex, interesting leading opportunities to men (particularly when it comes to blockbusters), it might be time to change their thinking.

Inside Llewyn Davis
Such is the awards season that just as your getting ready to wind things down on the west coast, or already in bed on the east coast, the honors keep coming. And the latest is from north of the border, with critics in Toronto weighing in on their faves of the year.

Review: David O. Russell's Delirious & Virtuoso 'American Hustle' With Christian Bale, Amy Adams & More

American Hustle
Since making his “comeback” in 2010 with “The Fighter,” David O. Russell has become a filmmaker to admire and respect—but not necessarily love. Both that film and “Silver Linings Playbook” expertly executed their narrative formulas, drawing adoration critical and commercial praise alike, but neither surpass the many, many others that used those same formulas, and unfortunately neither does “American Hustle.” But the difference at least with his latest effort is that it subverts the focus of other ‘70s-set movies about charming crooks—of which “Goodfellas” is the standard-bearer—by emphasizing emotional mechanics over the ones used to perpetrate their crimes.

David O. Russell, American Hustle, Playlist exclusive
Filmmaker David O. Russell has energy and enthusiasm to burn. “The Silver Lining’s Playbook” director is three for three now in his new era that includes “The Fighter” and his latest picture, “American Hustle” (review here). Starring the spectacular all-star cast of Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner on top of supporting turns by Robert De Niro, Louie C.K., Jack Huston, Elizabeth Rohm and many more, Russell’s latest is a colorful 1970s-set New York dramedy that centers on a con man (Bale), his partner (Adams), and the FBI agent who nabs them and puts them on the hook to cooperate in what becomes of the biggest conspiracy stings of that era that involved, mayors, senators and other government officials.

American Hustle
“I was broke, I was fearless and ... I had nothing to lose,” Amy Adams' Sydney Prosser declares during the opening stages of "American Hustle" (our review), and it's something of a statement of intent for many of the characters in the film. While the advertising has promised a vivacious, entertaining, period-soaked caper movie—which David O. Russell's film certainly is—"American Hustle" is also a surprisingly rich character piece, one in which good people try to do the right, but in the wrong way, in a morally gray world.

First! Once again, the New York Film Critics Circle made filmmakers and studios sweat to get their films screened in time as they position themselves to be the first (official) word on the awards race and augur of things to come ... at least until the National Board Of Review weighs in tomorrow. But for now, it looks like David O. Russell's "American Hustle" is the one to beat over the next couple of months.
