First! Once again, the New York Film Critics Circle made filmmakers and studios sweat to get their films screened in time as they position themselves to be the first (official) word on the awards race and augur of things to come ... at least until the National Board Of Review weighs in tomorrow. But for now, it looks like David O. Russell's "American Hustle" is the one to beat over the next couple of months.

With the Indie Spirit Award nominations just announced, prognosticators are now looking into their crystal ball anew, rethinking their Oscar predictions. But it pays to remember to that a) the Spirit Awards have a budget cutoff that renders lots of movies ineligible and b) obviously "American Hustle" and "The Wolf Of Wall Street" are two major movies that could alter the awards landscape in a big way. And one actress already being talked about in hushed tones for another Oscar statue is Jennifer Lawrence.

Catching Fire, feature
Now officially the all-time November opening record holder, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" was always a fairly sure thing in terms of box office. But what's more impressive is the advance word on the film (our own included), and the buzz around it, which has been so positive, with it being touted as the rare sequel that improves on the original, and with many going so far as to compare it to "The Empire Strikes Back." (Though, to be honest, we think that comparison is more to do with how open-ended it feels, with the good guys separated and some of them still imperiled, at the film's close.) Some of us might not go quite that far, but certainly director Francis Lawrence has made good on delivering a broader, more nuanced and more layered film than the first, which is fitting considering he was adapting what we'd consider the best of the three books, by quite some distance.

American Hustle
And the clock continues to tick down for "American Hustle," it remains, along with "The Wolf Of Wall Street," the only true question mark of the awards season. Is it going to put David O. Russell back in the awards race following two big successes with "The Fighter" and "Silver Linings Playbook," or is just a big piece of pop eye candy? We'll leave the answer to the pundits for now, and just enjoy this new clip instead.

American Hustle
It’s a testament to how great of an actor Christian Bale is: the year is almost done, but two of the most anticipated films from what's left of 2013 both star this “The Dark Knight Rises” actor. One of the films, “Out of The Furnace” we’ve seen (read our AFI review here). The other, “American Hustle” is still under wraps (though the first clip from the film arrived earlier today), so let’s start with that one.

While we ponder the horror script that David O. Russell wrote that Eli Roth might direct, the good news is that we've already got a new movie from the filmmaker coming our way. "American Hustle" is one of the hottest tickets left of the year yet to be seen by critics (alongside Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf Of Wall Street") but the curtain is slowly lifting, as we now have our first clip from the film.

Catching Fire
Considering “The Hunger Games” was one of the most overrated of the well-received tentpoles of 2012, never in my wildest dreams would I ever think the sequel, 'Catching Fire' would be favorably compared to “The Empire Strikes Back.” Or at least in Todd Gilchrist’s review of ‘Catching Fire’ he called it the ‘Empire… of YA adaptations.” Not too shabby. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Francis Lawrence is a filmmaker I typically associate with bland proficiency, but “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” – which honestly required nothing more than that to be considered successful -- is something truly remarkable. Easily the most sophisticated and thoughtful franchise film of 2013, Lawrence’s adaptation of the second novel in Suzanne Collins’ young adult series is all-things-to-all-people entertainment, a follow-up that intensifies the first film’s thrills while simultaneously developing its characters, and even more crucially, expanding its themes. The rare sequel that surpasses its predecessor, “Catching Fire” tackles head-on the repercussions of the events of “Hunger Games,” deepening Collins’ cinematic mythology even as it proves that teen-lit is more than capable of tackling complex ideas.

American Hustle
Last night in Los Angeles on the first full day of programming for AFI Fest this year, director David O. Russell and his eclectic body of cinematic work was celebrated at the historic Egyptian Theatre, and he also brought the first six minutes of his highly-anticipated new film, “American Hustle.” However, a host of technical issues—including screening the first two minutes almost completely without sound—led the director to grow a little ornery (“We should probably shut it off,” he said, before escaping the stage to settle the problem). But even those couldn’t dismantle the comic energy and early promise that his latest effort sampled.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Of the many things being promised in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"—bigger, better, more financially lucrative—is smoother camerawork thanks to Francis Lawrence's decision to forgo handheld. The result? Well, watching this first clip from the sequel, you won't get motion sickness.
