A quick look through his back catalogue or a few minutes in his company will tell you that Jeremy Irons, despite his Best Actor Oscar (for his creepy, ambiguous Claus von Bulow in 1990’s “Reversal of Fortune”) and despite the many auteurs he has worked with in the past (David Cronenberg, Steven Soderbergh, Louis Malle, Bernardo Bertolucci, David Lynch etc), regards himself, first and foremost, as a jobbing actor. It’s not every esteemed and awarded star, after all, who boasts a U.S. indie, two lavish TV dramas, a small role in a would-be YA blockbuster, a lead in a European co-production and the voice of a bar rag in an episode of the “The Simpsons” as his credits in just the last 14 months or so.

Berlin Review: 'Night Train To Lisbon' Chugs And Clanks Along In Old-Fashioned, Uninspired Style

In the very finest tradition of europudding, director Bille August's "Night Train To Lisbon" adapts an international bestselling book, takes place against the picturesque backdrop of a European capital, is half-told in flashback through a turbulent and dramatic period of history, and stacks the cast with notable European thesps. These include, Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Charlotte Rampling, Christopher Lee, Tom Courtenay representing the U.K.; from Germany, Martina Gedeck and August Diehl; Bruno Ganz of Switzerland; Lena Olin of Sweden; and representing France is Mélanie Laurent. However, bar Irons, this Babel tower of actors all play Portuguese nationals, and so while the films is told through English, they all speak with Portuguese accents.

Review: 'Beautiful Creatures' A Stylish Southern Gothic Riff On 'Twilight' That Gets Tangled In Its Own Mythology

Just as the "Harry Potter" franchise begat a number of costly imitators that failed to catch on (just think: "Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events," "The Spiderwick Chronicles," "Cirque du Freak"), so too will the unstoppable "Twilight" franchise breed countless would-be successors, each with some kind of otherworldly overtones and always with star-crossed lovers that defy the odds to be together (hello, "I Am Number Four"). Earlier this month we had zombies-in-love lark "Warm Bodies" and now we get "Beautiful Creatures," which transplants the Pacific Northwest setting of "Twilight" for the earthy Deep South and swaps that series' emphasis on vampires and werewolves for some much-needed attention to witches. Also, it's the kind of movie that heavily features not only Civil War flashbacks but also modern day kids participating in Civil War battlefield recreations. I do declare!

So, will Warner Bros. strike "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games" sized gold with "Beautiful Creatures," another young adult novel adaptation? Well, they might if they actually started marketing the thing, which comes out in about five months. But until a trailer drops, we'll have to do with some stills from the flick instead, which certainly don't hid the fantasy elements that are a big part of this story.

Bruno Ganz, Christopher Lee, Lena Olin, August Diehll & Jack Huston Also In CastFor a man with two Palme d'Ors and a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, we don't hear much from Danish filmmaker Bille August these days. The "Pelle the Conqueror" director has only made two films in the last decade, potboiler thriller "Return to Sender," with Aidan Quinn, which we had no idea existed, and Nelson Mandela biopic "Goodbye Bafana," which similarly disappeared without a trace. But he's got a Danish picture "The Passion of Marie" coming next year, and his name still clearly holds enough sway to get an impressive cast for his film after that.

Review: 'Lion King 3D' Maintains All of the Majesty of the Original, With Added Dimensional Sparkle

A few years ago, Disney planned a theatrical release for a 3D version of "Beauty & the Beast," using the cutting edge, post-"Avatar" technology that we've all come to know so well (and sometimes dread just as much). The conversion took place, at great expense, but the theatrical engagement (originally set for February, 2010) never materialized. Still, the studio pressed ahead (Walt always said that good ideas never die), and this week the studio's traditionally animated crown jewel "The Lion King," in a shiny new 3D format, will get a proper release – in 2,000 3D screens across the country. But what does a 3D version of a traditionally animated movie look like, exactly? And is it worth seeing again, with a 3D ticket surcharge no less?

Given that it was as significant an event in the world as any in the last century, it's not surprising that Hollywood have finally turned their eye to the 2008 financial apocalypse; even if it's unlikely to bring in the teens, it's inherently dramatic subject matter, and this year has already seen Curtis Hanson's solid "Too Big To Fail," and people like George Clooney potentially eyeing the subject in the near future. Next up is "Margin Call," the starry drama that picked up solid reviews at Sundance this year.

If there was any doubt before that Bradley Cooper is a fully-fledged movie star, the first few months of 2011 have wiped that away: he took an underdog genre picture "Limitless," sold almost entirely on his name, to an impressive gross of nearly $150 million worldwide, while "The Hangover Part II" overcame its poisonous reviews to make nearly that much in only a week of release in the U.S. alone. And, while we're not convinced of his charms just yet (he comes across as a little smug), Cooper's certainly made some interesting choices with his stardom.

Word had gone quiet for a few months on "The Words," a Black List script that picked up Bradley Cooper as its star, with Jeremy Irons in negotiations, back in February. With Cooper proving himself a bona-fide movie star with the surprise success of "Limitless," and attaching himself to everything from "The Crow" and "Paradise Lost" to, more excitingly, Derek Cianfrance's "Blue Valentine" follow-up "Place Beyond The Pines," we'd wondered if the project was still on the cards for the actor.
