Here's a disturbing trend of late. Didn't "Days Of Thunder" teach us anything? Sure, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" showed us there's laughs to be found within the world of auto racing, but seriously, how many great films of this genre can you name? "Death Race 2000," "Two-Lane Blacktop" and "Grand Prix" are three that come to mind, though "great" is a relative term here (if you named the "Fast & Furious" series and or the "Cannonball Run" films, kindly vacate your seat and leave our chapel, please).

Teaming up on three films -- "The Yards," "We Own The Night" and "Two Lovers" -- there hasn't been any director/actor pairing in recent American cinema as rewarding as that between James Gray and Joaquin Phoenix. However, circa the actor's stunt during the press rounds for "Two Lovers" where he grew a Will Oldham-esque beard and declared he was starting a rap career, many wondered if that relationship was over. And despite what reports may have surfaced, Gray wasn't worried, saying as early as February 2009 that he was confident he would work with Phoenix again. Then in September of last year, it was revealed that he was in on the joke from the beginning. So the joke is over, Joaquin Phoenix needs to get back to work and the duo are pairing up for their fourth film. And they've got some fantastic talent to help them out.

Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner and by the looks of it out there, agents, PR folks and news leakers have already left for the weekend so let's rewind to something we missed earlier in the week while we're all lamenting the fact that a horrible sequel is set to gross over a $100 million this weekend, sadly.

More Casting Bits: Alice Eve & Liev Schreiber Join Director Mark Pellington, Craig Bierko Will Play A 'Stooges' VillainProducers in Cannes talk loose. There's a bevy of talks, negotiations and (shudder) pre-attachment deals going on around the Croisette this week, but don't be surprised if all the actors announced don't actually appear in the films they're touted to be in (see last year when, for example Amy Adams was listed in the original version of John Hillcoat's "The Wettest County," which died and then came back to life this year). A lot of these are early teasing promises to get investors involved and sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

Just yesterday we called for an intervention for Jeremy Renner, following the announcement he joined the voice cast of "Ice Age 4." The Oscar nominated actor has been worrying us of late, as he has a string of roles in big shiny tentpoles -- "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol," "The Bourne Legacy," "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" -- that aren't necessarily the best showcase for his tremendous talent. Well, Renner has bounced back into our good books as not only has he set up his own production shingle -- something almost every actor of note has in Hollywood -- but the first project sounds great.

So much for Vulture's report on Joel Edgerton, published earlier today huh? Does Jeremy Renner have the lead role in Tony Gilroy's "The Bourne Legacy" all sown up? All signs point to yes. Last week it was rumored that Universal wanted the breakout "Hurt Locker" star for the lead, despite all the testing they had been doing of up-and-coming actors, and that much has been confirmed. There seems to be two reports that are saying much of the same, but not quite.

There's no doubt that the Universal Bourne series spinoff "The Bourne Legacy" has been one of the biggest casting tickets in town. Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, Kellan Lutz, Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer and Benjamin Walker have all been tossed around as potential actors to take on the next chapter in the franchise, but it appears one name has risen to the top that hasn't been mentioned yet.

Cast Already Includes Jeremy Renner & Jennifer GarnerThe European Film Market in Berlin is in full swing this weekend and film deals are happening left, right and center. A lot of times these attachments and or pre-attachments are made to attract and or entice financiers and don't always come to fruition, but we'll give this one the benefit of the doubt.
