The Double, Eisenberg
Yeah, we know, the film came out last month, but after dropping The Best Films Of 2014 So Far..., "The Double" is back on our minds. It indeed is one of the finest pieces of cinema from the first six months of the year, but what can often be lost in the discussing the film's many accomplishments is how much it rests entirely on the chemistry between director Richard Ayoade and star Jesse Eisenberg. Well, you can see just why they got on so well in this recent interview.

Night Moves, Kelly Reichardt
"These are tough, this is like a little quiz." When we got a chance recently to chat with Kelly Reichardt, she was game if not a little trepidatious to take part in another of our semi-regular features in which we attempt to scavenge through a filmmaker's life in cinema, in hopes of finding out how the movies have influenced their life and work. The filmmaker's latest minimalist feature "Night Moves" which she directed, edited and co-wrote (with frequent collaborator, Oregon novelist and screenwriter Jonathan Raymond), begins rolling out to independent theaters across the country this Friday.

Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard in "Night Moves"
For some people, taking a stand means signing on online petition, maybe writing a letter to their local politician or even marching in an organized protest. But for others they desire something with more direct results, even if that means something violent and illegal. And that's the jumping off point for Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves," an intimate look at a trio of activists who are plotting something that will change their lives forever.

Review: Richard Ayoade's 'The Double' Starring Jesse Eisenberg Is Bonkers, Hilarious And Wickedly Clever

The Double
When Richard Ayoade arrived in 2010 with his charming tale of adolescence and young romance with the stylish "Submarine," the picture was immediately greeted with rather reductive comparisons to Wes Anderson. It was an unfair assessment levelled at the movie and filmmaker—even from those who championed the film—that diminished what an accomplished piece of cinema Ayoade had put together. And one can't help but wonder if "The Double" is a sly response to those criticisms of borrowing from others. Certainly, his latest will invoke names like Terry Gilliam and Michel Gondry to be tossed around, but make no mistake: not only does "The Double" confirm Ayoade as one of the brightest rising talents behind the camera, it's completely his own and unlike anything you've seen in cinemas in quite some time.

The End Of The Tour Jason Segel Jesse Eisenberg set photo
Literary eyebrows were raised all over the place when we learned, late last year, that Jason Segel was set to play cult writer David Foster Wallace in James Ponsoldt's biopic “The End of the Tour," which will adapt journalist David Lipsky's account of accompanying Wallace on a book tour just as “Infinite Jest” was making him a strange kind of superstar (Jesse Eisenberg will play Lipsky). People had trouble imagining arch-slacker and Muppet-lover Segel embodying the depressive Wallace, though the physical resemblance in the first images from the set was pretty impressive.

Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard in "Night Moves"
There's a million ways for the perfect plan to go wrong, and the trio leading Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves" are trying to avoid them all. One of our Most Anticipated Films Of The Summer, the low key thriller could be a nice change of pace from the eye-melting, ear-shattering blockbusters coming in the next few months, and another new clip has arrived to give you taste of what's coming.

Rio 2
These days, the potential for animated films is seemingly limitless. In the past few months, we've seen Disney's boldly contemporary fairy tale "Frozen" deservedly become the highest grossing animated movie of all time, while Hayao Miyazaki was able to delicately frame the story of a man who made war machines as a love letter to artistic pursuit with "The Wind Rises," and "The Lego Movie" transcended its commercial base to become a dazzlingly funny and heartfelt movie about the true power of imagination. So it's such a shame, then, that a movie like Blue Sky Studios' "Rio 2" comes along – a visually stunning, wholly empty experience that fails to conjure any emotion stronger than an impassive shrug.

The Double
"It was the idea of somebody so invisible & lowly that their double could appear and no one would notice; that was funny," director Richard Ayoade said during a recent Q&A about this forthcoming "The Double." And indeed, the film's pleasures come from indulging in the absurdness of the scenario of a doppelganger emerging, consuming the life of his opposite, and no one being any the wiser except for the double.
