Rio 2
These days, the potential for animated films is seemingly limitless. In the past few months, we've seen Disney's boldly contemporary fairy tale "Frozen" deservedly become the highest grossing animated movie of all time, while Hayao Miyazaki was able to delicately frame the story of a man who made war machines as a love letter to artistic pursuit with "The Wind Rises," and "The Lego Movie" transcended its commercial base to become a dazzlingly funny and heartfelt movie about the true power of imagination. So it's such a shame, then, that a movie like Blue Sky Studios' "Rio 2" comes along – a visually stunning, wholly empty experience that fails to conjure any emotion stronger than an impassive shrug.

The Double
"It was the idea of somebody so invisible & lowly that their double could appear and no one would notice; that was funny," director Richard Ayoade said during a recent Q&A about this forthcoming "The Double." And indeed, the film's pleasures come from indulging in the absurdness of the scenario of a doppelganger emerging, consuming the life of his opposite, and no one being any the wiser except for the double.

Night Moves
Deliberate and the measured, the oeuvre of Kelly Reichardt—which has included films "Old Joy," "Wendy & Lucy" and "Meek's Crossing"—isn't for everyone. That said, she's been able to attract some pretty terrific talent for her films, with Michelle Williams making two movies with the director. Her next project, "Night Moves," she rounds up Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard for a tale with a more provocative punch.

The End Of The Tour Jason Segel Jesse Eisenberg set photo
Somewhere beyond the grave, David Foster Wallace is writing a great essay with extensive footnotes about the fact that Jason Segel will be playing him in a movie. Yep, the late Pulitzer Prize finalist will be portrayed by the guy who got his dick out and wrote a puppet musical in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." It's kinda poetic, in a strange way.

The Double, Eisenberg
Opening this weekend, Denis Villeneuve's "Enemy" using the conduit of the doppelganger (a popular cinematic theme, see our recent feature) to explore themes of identity and sexuality in a brilliantly surreal headfuck of a movie. And while Richard Ayoade's "The Double" also plays with two man as duplicates of each other, his aims are much more whimsical, but no less satisfying.

The Double, Eisenberg
While on the surface, "Enemy" and "The Double" might seem like similar films, with both featuring stories about doppelgängers, but really they couldn't be more different. Where Jake Gyllenhaal's film is an existential, psychosexual thriller, Jesse Eisenberg's movie is a steampunk, fantastical delight. And better yet, both are worth tracking down.

The Double
After a series of playful teasers that focused on atmosphere or tone, or told stories about snakes, a new traditional trailer has arrived for Richard Ayoade's "The Double." Well, about as traditional as a movie like this can get, which is another way of saying, this is truly something special.

The Double
What would happen if you met your exact doppleganger, except he was more successful, sexier, cleverer and more confident than you were? That's the dilemma facing Jesse Eisenberg's Simon James in Richard Ayoade's entertaining "The Double." And another inventive trailer is here for the film.
