Very few films, and even fewer debut features, have reached the same mass pop cultural awareness as Jared Hess’ “Napoleon Dynamite.” Unfortunately, none of Hess’ follow-ups have matched his first film in either box office or critical success. His next film, however, may at least see him back in multiplexes the world over as he brings in Jim Carrey as his leading man.

Just a couple of weeks ago it was looking unlikely that Jim Carrey, sought to play Colonel Stars, a member of a Justice League-like band of real-life superheroes in "KickA-Ass 2: Balls to the Walls," would actually make an appearance in the high profile sequel. But hey, it looks like enough strings were pulled, favors promised, and back-end points awarded, because Carrey is indeed set to co-star in the follow-up to the jazzy deconstructionist comic book movie.

So it was only yesterday that we were discussing the possibility of Jim Carrey joining the sequel to 2010’s “Kick-Ass” – a film the comedian is reportedly a big fan of. He would be joining a cast that has Aaron Johnson, Chloë Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and maybe even Nicolas Cage all returning, as well as a handful of new additions including Donald Faison and Morris Chestnut. But even yesterday it looked like a long shot, and despite Carrey’s apparent love of Matthew Vaughn’s film, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that their sources think the chances of Carrey taking the role of Colonel Stars (a mobster-turned-fundamentalist-Christian-turned-superhero-recruiter) are slim -- presumably the smaller budget of the sequel to the underperfoming original can't quite afford him.

Aaron Johnson’s Kick-Ass is returning to the big screen for a second outing, and new director Jeff Wadlow looks to be gathering a head of steam in terms of casting the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s alternative superhero movie. Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and even Nicolas Cage (in a rumoured cameo role) all look set to return for “Kick Ass 2: Balls to the Wall,” and the task of filling the huge amount of supporting roles from Mark Millar’s twisted comic book sequel is now well underway.

Currently keeping busy with a fine performance on HBO’s “The Newsroom,” even when the show around him perhaps isn’t so good, actor Jeff Daniels’ commitments to the Aaron Sorkin show obviously means that his film opportunities will be somewhat slimmer in the near future. The star will appear next in Rian Johnson’s “Looper,” but after that talk will instead turn to one of the numerous projects waiting for Daniels to take a break from the show. One that keeps cropping up is the long-discussed sequel to “Dumb and Dumber,” and only a few months after Jim Carrey suggested that the film was dead, Daniels recently expressed the opposite.

Talked about fro almost as long as the Farrelly Brothers' "The Three Stooges," a sequel to "Dumb & Dumber" seems to have been kicking around as an idea/rumor for a while now and for fans of the awesomely low-brow comedy, it looked like those dreams were coming true. This spring, Peter Farrelly confidently stated he had Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels set to return with a September shoot all lined up. But those plans appear to have been canceled.

In the works for a while now, and most recently kicking back to life last summer when it was reported that Jim Carrey was eyeballing a sequel to "Dumb & Dumber" as a potential next project, it looks like everything is coalescing for the return of Harry and Lloyd.

It's been a quiet few years for Jim Carrey. Since the release of Robert Zemeckis' "A Christmas Carol" back in 2009 in which Carrey underwent the mo-cap treatment, we've only seen him in the disappointing "Mr. Popper's Penguins." So, more accurately, it's actually been a long time since we saw Carrey in a legitimately good film. If you ignore the brilliant "I Love You Phillip Morris" (which me might as well considering the amount of people who saw it) Carrey hasn't shown up in a decent film in quite a few years. But might all that be about to change?

You would have to go back to 2008's "Yes Man" for the last bona fide Jim Carrey hit. Since then he's starred in the underrated "I Love You Phillip Morris" (which nobody saw anyway), that ill-advised version of "A Christmas Carol" (which did good business, but isn't exactly a Jim Carrey Movie) and last summer's "Mr. Popper's Penguins," which made good coin overseas, but didn't quite register stateside. It looks like he may have a comeback project in the long-developing "Burt Wonderstone" with Steve Carell, which starts lensing soon, but if things go according to plan he'll pick up on a franchise that "The Office" star had taken over for him.
