There is no doubt that after making a huge statement with "Animal Kingdom," that Hollywood would be interested in Australian director David Michod. He was wishlisted for the Irish-American cop drama "Once Were Cops" and there was likely more than one project studo execs wanted to send his way. However, for this followup to the acclaimed crime family drama, Michod is staying in his native home, and working with a longtime collaborator instead.

It looks like the hunt for Osama Bin Laden won't be the only place where Jessica Chastain and Joel Edgerton will hang together. The two rising actors will be reteaming for another project, one that as you might guess from the titles, has a rather ambitious concept.

Call it a resurgence of Australian cinema, but it seems the even-year Sundance Film Festivals are the place to catch the movies that find their way across the pond and to the audiences that desire dark, interesting thrillers that masquerade as family dramas. “Animal Kingdom” introduced a wide audience to Joel Edgerton who played as ruthless family man Baz. It's a fitting return for Edgerton to the 2012 Sundance Film Festival with “Wish You Were Here,” an examination of how three people deal with the loss of their friend after a week of partying in Southeast Cambodia. Of course, it wouldn't be a modern Australian thriller if there weren't hidden intentions, distorted memory and deconstruction of the nuclear family. Produced under the Aussie film collective, Blue Tongue Films (which counts among its members Joel's brother Nash and co-writer/director Kieran Darcy-Smith), the film opened the festival last Thursday and The Playlist caught up with Edgerton and co-star Teresa Palmer about their character choices, future projects and the distribution model they'd prefer for their film.

If 2011 saw Joel Edgerton getting his feet wet in Hollywood with roles in "Warrior" and "The Thing," 2012 will see the Aussie actor fully diving into those waters. He'll feature prominently in two films slated to be major awards season players, Baz Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" and Kathryn Bigelow's untitled Osama Bin Laden/Seal Team 6 pic. And not only that, he's giving family films a try, starring opposite Jennifer Garner in Disney's "The Odd Life Of Timothy Green." But Edgerton isn't content to wait for opportunities to fall into his lap, and just before he headed to Sundance to premiere his latest Aussie effort "Wish You Were Here," he sold a script to New Regency titled "One Night Stand."

There are a couple ways to start calling your own shots in Hollywood. One is to start your own producing shingle, and any big name actor you can think of (Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Mark Wahlberg) has an outlet where they can develop projects. Well, for Joel Edgerton, he's already got Blue Tongue Films, the Aussie collective of filmmakers, where he can cook up material and collaborate, but in order to open some more doors in Hollywood, he's taking a different approach.

Well, here's a piece of good news. Attached way back last spring for Kathryn Bigelow's upcoming untitled Seal Team 6 movie (aka "Kill Bin Laden"), we began to get worried about Joel Edgerton's involvement when the project began further casting this fall -- adding Jason Clarke -- and his name remained conspicuously absent.

Well, they're here folks! The first two images that Warner Bros. (courtesy of Sassisam, via The Film Stage) has chosen to release from Baz Luhrmann's splashy and expensive take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's required reading list staple "The Great Gatsby" and, well, they look like an adaptation of "The Great Gatsby," albeit one with a pretty enticing cast.

You can't stop Hollywood from trying to make stars, even if the audience isn't biting. After the complete failure of "Warrior" and "The Thing," Joel Edgerton remains in demand, evevn if he can still walk the streets completely unrecognized. He was in the mix for a potential supporting role in the now-defunct "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." and recently was sought to play Themosticles in the currently-gestating "300: Battle Of Artemisium." However, Variety has heard something new on the Aussie grapevine: they're reporting that Edgerton has turned the role down, leaving the Noam Murro actioner without a leading man.

We once described rising Australian actor Joel Edgerton as the "thinking man's Sam Worthington" and, while as unfair as that may sound, we're thinking Hollywood is starting to share our views on him as well.
