Sandman Joseph Gordon-Levitt
While certainly not without its problems, “Don Jon” proved a major effort from its director and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt this year, first gaining acclaim at Sundance before making its way to theatres in September. His directing skills were the main takeaway from the experience though, and they haven’t gone unnoticed: news comes today that Levitt may be attached to a considerable leap in material for his sophomore feature, and also that he’s to lead the U.S. cast in the final film from the master of Japanese animation.

Trying to find your footing after the end of a successful sitcom can be tremendously difficult but John Krasinski has been making some pretty smart moves. While it wasn't quite the success many thought it would be, you can't fault anyone for teaming with Matt Damon on "Promised Land" (they both co-wrote it), and let's not forget he has an HBO miniseries brewing with Aaron Sorkin. Now Jim Halpert is going to hang with Cameron Crowe and a lot of other big names.

With "Grown Ups 2" starring "SNL" alumnus Adam Sandler and "King of Queens" star Kevin James opening this weekend, and "The Way Way Back" with Steve Carell of "The Office" fame out since last week, your local multiplex will soon be playing a choice of films with star actors who originally made their names in TV comedy shows. All three of these guys have carved out the kind of big-screen success that means we arguably now associate them more with movies than with television, but that's a trick that many have tried and only few have really pulled off.

This fall will mark fifty years since November 22, 1963 -- a date that continues to haunt American history. When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, it seemed to mark an undeniable shift in the country, away from the positivity and hope that followed War War II, into a more fraught and frightened era with more wars overseas, social and political upheaval and much more. To mark the anniversary, there will undoubtedly be a ton of programming and films to choose from, and this is one of them.

Someone raised an interesting but kind of depressing point about Pixar recently. Between 1995 and 2009, the peerless animation company produced ten movies, with just one of those being sequel – 1999’s “Toy Story 2.” If all goes as expected, between 2010 and 2015 four of the company’s seven features will have been sequels, the third of which, “Monsters University” (a prequel, technically, but you catch our drift) is set for release in just over two months time.

So, the Oscars are over, and you're likely waking up today with a nacho cheese hangover and still wondering why so much of the broadcast was dedicated to "Chicago" and "Dreamgirls." But if you still had any kind of energy left over from the four-hour slog, perhaps you stayed up to watch "Jimmy Kimmel Live." And if not? Well, we have the magic of YouTube.

Review: Earnest & Well-Intentioned ‘Promised Land’ Doesn’t Quite Convince

If the narrative of the modern-day salesman in fiction is that of a man who believes in his business but finds his faith shaken once the white lies of his trade begin to grow, a man who loses his moral compass and finds himself along the way, then “Promised Land" doesn’t stray far from that mold. And at the crossroads of America, if big business represents greed, well then small-town communities must clearly represent strength and resolve.

In case you forgot, "Zero Dark Thirty" isn't the only topical drama hitting theaters this month. Right before everyone gets wasted on New Year's Eve, "Promised Land" will hit theaters, a drama set against the backdrop of a tumbling economy, and the promise of financial gains through the controversial method of extracting natural gas known as fracking. It will be the last awards season player to hit theaters, but before it comes out near you, seven clips have arrived to give you a taste.
