Transcendence
We are the company we keep, and in the case of Wally Pfister, he and his professional cronies are some of the most iconic around. As DP alongside Christopher Nolan, his outlook working with key actors promises a certain atmosphere, a unique method. So here we are: a gloomy thriller trying to ground its at-times-daffy premise, emphasis on a grieving protagonist, with supporting turns from Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy. These aren’t rumored plot details from Nolan’s “Interstellar,” however. No, in mounting his feature directorial debut, “Transcendence,” Pfister has chosen to tackle familiarity head on, carving out a new arena for himself while rigging the grounds with pitfalls at every step.

Since their first partnership on 2000’s “Memento," the work of Oscar-winning DP Wally Pfister has helped shape and define the trademark style of Christopher Nolan and his output. His influence has proved so pronounced that Nolan’s upcoming “Interstellar” will mark an unclear break in DNA, it being “The Dark Knight” director’s first outing in 14 years without his usual collaborator.

Transcendence, Johnny Depp
Okay, here's an odd one. So, Justin Long was interviewed by Long Island News Day, in a piece published a few weeks ago. But it has picked up interest because the actor seemingly randomly name dropped/humblebragged about a major star popping up in Kevin Smith's forthcoming "Tusk." Either that or something went horribly awry in the transcription process.

After delivering excellent scores for both Bennett Miller's "Moneyball" and Ang Lee's "Life Of Pi" (he was Oscar nominated for the latter), we're going to be paying attention to whatever Mychael Danna does next, and we won't have to wait long. Next week, he's the man behind the music in Wally Pfister's "Transcendence," and a preview of his work is here.

10 Best Performances In Jim Jarmusch Movies
It all seems so obvious in retrospect. Of course, of all the parts Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston were born to play, a pair of lovelorn vampires battling the ennui of immortality in a Jim Jarmusch movie should always have been at the top of the list. “Only Lovers Left Alive,” which opens this weekend (review here), makes good on that logline and then some, delivering Jarmusch’s most deliriously enjoyable film in ages (see our complete retrospective of his films here), and showcasing as ever a cast that turn in terrific performances right down to the smallest supporting performer. But it’s Hiddleston and Swinton who carry the film, and they do so with such louche grace that they make their vampiric lifestyle seem dark and twisted and tortured and yet also so seductive and alluring and downright sexy, that at the potential cost of our eternal souls we’d proffer our own necks to them at the drop of a hat.

Stepping out from the shadow of Christopher Nolan, at the age of 52, to make your directorial debut, might have a lot of baggage and expectations attached to it, but Wally Pfister is ready for it. "If people are expecting Nolan-lite, I think they'll be surprised," he told the LA Times last month. "My training comes from Chris, but my emotional content comes from a different era. I'm steeped in a 1970s, pre-'Star Wars' period, films like 'Soylent Green.' Chris comes from a different place."
