Weekend Box Office: 'The Avengers' Crosses The $1 Billion Mark In 19 Days; Registers First-Ever $100 Million Second Weekend

When a movie scores the biggest opening weekend of all time (by nearly $40 million, in this case), the expectation is that it should continue to smash records. So, at a glance, “The Avengers” scoring the largest second weekend in film history isn’t exactly newsworthy. Though most prognosticators pegged the film, following a stupefying opening act of $207 million, to level off in the vicinity of 70% or so. As it turns out, a lot of your friends missed out on the movie the first time around, and after losing a little more than half of it’s first weekend tally, it’s the first film ever with two nine-figure weekend grosses. Based on the popular 1960s/1970s ABC soap that included vampires, werewolves and witches, the film is a curious blend of comedy, drama and horror that's indelibly a Tim Burton creation.

Johnny Depp Says Dr. Seuss Biopic Will Involve Animated & Live-Action Characters

After making Disney billions of dollars with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, Johnny Depp has started writing his own ticket through his Infinitum Nihil shingle, evidenced by "The Rum Diary" and the upcoming "Dark Shadows," which Depp produced and helped develop with director Tim Burton and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith. Depp is currently shooting "The Lone Ranger," but has several other projects in the works, one of which is a biopic of Theodore Giesel, aka Dr. Seuss, which Depp set up last year to produce and possibly star in. The film is still in very early stages (i.e. no script, but Depp's possible participation means it's being actively developed), but the actor has revealed what he has in mind for the biopic, which could see Seuss interacting with his famous characters.

“Dark Shadows” is not the worst movie that Tim Burton has ever made, but that’s only because there’s nothing worse than “Alice in Wonderland.” A desperate jumble of ideas in search of deeper substance, much less focus, Burton’s latest collaboration with actor Johnny Depp is the latest, and perhaps greatest, proof that yet exists for a director, Burton’s a hell of a production designer. Given the film’s incredible lack of cohesion – or follow-through – the film feels like the resigned end result of a studio’s best efforts to whittle an unwieldly mess into something manageable, but far too many of its shortcomings remain exposed for it to play as anything other than a showcase for the star and filmmaker’s laziness, hubris, or both.

We've had an inkling thus far that "Dark Shadows" would be a return to form for both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, whose batting average over their last few films -- "Alice In Wonderland," "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" -- has been inconsistent at best. But this latest, extensive look at the movie seems to indicate they are back on track in a big way.

And with a new album out now, the former Beatle rounded up mega-watt stars Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman to star in the three different videos for the lead single. And if that's not enough, he also got Christopher Nolan's regular collaborator, cinematographer Wally Pfister, to shoot them. Like we said, dude can make anything happen.

How could a movie based around a cult TV show that no one really remembers all that fondly be turned into a summer blockbuster hit? Well, for one you pair up Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, and then you (finally) release a trailer that is not only pretty rock solid, but seems to finds the top talents comfortably in their wheelhouse. Is it still a bit too quirky and strange? You might think so, but even the competition knows better, and it was earlier this week Paramount decided to get out of the way, moving "The Dictator" back five days from May 11th, having it open the following Wednesday on May 16th, effectively ending what would've been one of the summer's biggest showdowns at the box office. So with all that preamble out of the way, let's get to the movie, shall we?
