Transformer: Age of Extinction
Still no sign of J.C. Chandor's "A Most Violent Year" on the fall festival slate, but while we wait to see where the film pops up (*cough* Telluride *cough*), the director is keeping busy with the lineup for his next, "Deepwater Horizon," landing none other than Mark Wahlberg for the lead role. The movie is based on a true story and will find the actor playing the "No. 2 manager on the doomed oil rig" in the movie that "revisits the acts of heroism that followed in trying to rescue men in the water, stories not known to the general public." Production starts next year.

Mortdecai
Johnny Depp evidently does what he pleases in between “Pirates Of The Caribbean” movies and installments of his newly-minted “Alice In Wonderland” franchise. So no matter how many chinks in his armor he's sustained via flops like “Transcendence,” “Dark Shadows," "The Rum Diary" and the now infamous “The Lone Ranger,” he always has his fallback cash-cows. One gets the impression that he considers poorly performing films as someone else’s problem: Depp appears in films that interest him and that’s that. His latest whimsy? Depp will star in “Mortdecai,” a James Bond-esque spy comedy revolving around a dapper idiot.

Question: Is "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" aka "Dead Men Tell No Tales" shooting in early 2015 per recent rumors: Answer: Hell, no. Disney announced today that 'Pirates 5' will land in theaters on July 7th, 2017. What does this mean? Well, it’s yet another delay. And considering the film was aiming for a summer 2015 release and then delayed again just last year, the filmmakers and producers are not close to shooting and probably still tinkering with the screenplay (and at this point considering how many writers have worked on that project, possibly starting from scratch). The film will land in theaters six years after “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” which was the lowest grossing film in the franchise domestically.

The Secret Life Of Houdini Johnny Depp
"The Secret Life Of Houdini" has been kicking around Hollywood for years now. Gary Ross and Joe Wright kicked the tires on the project but ultimately decided not to direct, with the less illustrious name of Dean Parisot ("Red 2," "Fun With Dick And Jane," "Galaxy Quest") signing up to direct last summer. But now the film has received a kick in the pants, thanks to none other than Johnny Depp.

Benedict Cumberbatch
Ok, here's a pairing you don't see everyday. While Johnny Depp and Guy Pearce together and side-by-side in the Whitey Bulger gangster pic "Black Mass" would have been a terrific paring, "The Rover" star has had to drop out for scheduling reasons. Alas, nothing to fear here Cross Creek Productions has found a more than viable replacement with in-demand actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

'Mortdecai'
Johnny Depp is a man of many faces, costumes, hairdos and appearances, obviously. His visages basically fall into two camps 1) looking like Johnny Depp’s “movie guy lead character” (i.e. that sort of generic look from “Transcendence” with those same round glasses he uses in so many of his “normal” roles) and 2) his wild and wacky transformations. But in this first look from his upcoming action comedy “Mortdecai,” well, maybe that appearance splits the difference.

Transcendence
We are the company we keep, and in the case of Wally Pfister, he and his professional cronies are some of the most iconic around. As DP alongside Christopher Nolan, his outlook working with key actors promises a certain atmosphere, a unique method. So here we are: a gloomy thriller trying to ground its at-times-daffy premise, emphasis on a grieving protagonist, with supporting turns from Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy. These aren’t rumored plot details from Nolan’s “Interstellar,” however. No, in mounting his feature directorial debut, “Transcendence,” Pfister has chosen to tackle familiarity head on, carving out a new arena for himself while rigging the grounds with pitfalls at every step.

Since their first partnership on 2000’s “Memento," the work of Oscar-winning DP Wally Pfister has helped shape and define the trademark style of Christopher Nolan and his output. His influence has proved so pronounced that Nolan’s upcoming “Interstellar” will mark an unclear break in DNA, it being “The Dark Knight” director’s first outing in 14 years without his usual collaborator.

Transcendence, Johnny Depp
Okay, here's an odd one. So, Justin Long was interviewed by Long Island News Day, in a piece published a few weeks ago. But it has picked up interest because the actor seemingly randomly name dropped/humblebragged about a major star popping up in Kevin Smith's forthcoming "Tusk." Either that or something went horribly awry in the transcription process.

After delivering excellent scores for both Bennett Miller's "Moneyball" and Ang Lee's "Life Of Pi" (he was Oscar nominated for the latter), we're going to be paying attention to whatever Mychael Danna does next, and we won't have to wait long. Next week, he's the man behind the music in Wally Pfister's "Transcendence," and a preview of his work is here.
