While there's another "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movie on the way, it seems that Johnny Depp is swashbuckling Jack Sparrow style off-screen as well. Much to the surprise of Terry Gilliam, the actor has put his own "Don Quixote" project into development at Disney, and now he's joining another project that has a rival movie on the same subject brewing, with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Before the intriguing possibilities contained within Johnny Depp and Wally Pfister's collaboration on “Transcendence” come to fruition, there's still the matter of the iconic actor's more traditional roles: namely, that of the eccentric, whimsy-tinged adventurer on which he's plied his trade for quite some time, and now is eyeing a return to in the near future for a director well-versed in the type.

Remember when bloggers said "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" would begin shooting in November of 2012 because the always-reliable Caribbean Business was reporting that Disney has confirmed a Puerto Rico shoot last year? Yeah, that didn't obviously happen. In fact, while a script for a fifth 'Pirates' movie was reportedly finished in May of 2011, clearly it's not ready for prime time and the film isn't going in front of cameras any time soon.

Quentin Tarantino has a stable of familiar actors he works with, but for his latest film, "Django Unchained," the director switched it up, casting two actors he's never worked with before for prominent roles: Jamie Foxx as the lead and Leonardo DiCaprio as the villain (arguably there are lots of new faces including Kerry Washington, Don Johnson and more).

So, last month when The Wrap dropped some details on the plot of Wally Pfister's secretive, Christopher Nolan produced "Transcendence," it turned out some of it was a bit off. But now they've actually grabbed a script and talked so producers, so this should be legit. And lest you were concerned that this might just be another ordinary day at the multiplex sci-fi ballpark, you would be mistaken.

Ten years ago, the first trailers were appearing for a hopeful big summer blockbuster that many thought was destined for disaster. The movie would be taking on a genre that had long since led to nothing but flops, starring some relative unknowns backed up by quirky character actor Johnny Depp, and would be based on source material that raised many an eyebrow. But the summer of 2003 saw "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl" become a monster hit, launching one of the biggest modern-day franchises, stretching to four movies to date, and turning Depp from beloved oddball to global megastar.

Uh oh, is the bromance between Johnny Depp and Terry Gilliam fracturing? The pair who teamed on "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" and "The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus" (with the actor stepping in along with Jude Law and Colin Farrell when Heath Ledger passed away during production) have famously been trying to mount "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" for years, after the initial attempt was beset by all variety of disasters, chronicled in the documentary "Lost In La Mancha." It has pretty much been Gilliam's baby, a movie he's been trying to get back on the horse with for years, but late last week Depp stole his thunder.

Well, ain't that a kick in the head. For those with short memories, around a decade ago, Terry Gilliam went into production on a film called "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote," starring his "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas" star Johnny Depp as a modern day ad executive somehow transported to medieval Spain, who ends up serving as the Pancho Villa to the legendary Don Quixote (Jean Rochefort), the hero of Miguel de Cervantes' beloved tale. But the film was beset by problems, from financing to floods, and was shut down after a few weeks of filming when it emerged that Rochefort had a chronic back injury that made it almost impossible for him to ride a horse.

Maybe this is why he dropped out of Wes Anderson's "Grand Budapest Hotel"? Whatever the reason, at the very least we heartily endorse Johnny Depp's next move, as he has landed a role in a film that will now be leap frogging its way up Most Anticipated lists.
