We're still puzzling it out if Wally Pfister's "Transcendence" sounds either deeply awesome or deeply hilarious (maybe both?) but some new pics and a poster are here to take you into the deep web.

Stepping out from the shadow of Christopher Nolan, at the age of 52, to make your directorial debut, might have a lot of baggage and expectations attached to it, but Wally Pfister is ready for it. "If people are expecting Nolan-lite, I think they'll be surprised," he told the LA Times last month. "My training comes from Chris, but my emotional content comes from a different era. I'm steeped in a 1970s, pre-'Star Wars' period, films like 'Soylent Green.' Chris comes from a different place."

Johnny Depp
Because we live in a time when there's going to be at least four "The Amazing Spider-Man" movies, and "The Transporter" is getting an origin story, it's no surprise that studios want franchises. Basically, the thinking is that audiences would prefer to see a story they already know, rather than something original (which in the eyes of studios, is potentially risky). Which brings us to franchise grandaddy Johnny Depp, who is the swashbuckling billion dollar man behind four "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movies (with a fifth on the way), while also the face of the "Alice In Wonderland" series (with "Through The Looking Glass" coming in 2016). So naturally, Lionsgate wants a bit of that pie.

Black Mass Johnny Depp Tom Hardy
At one time set to be directed by Barry Levinson with Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton starring, the Whitey Bulger drama "Black Mass" was shut down and seemed like one of those projects that may be forever troubled. Well, scratch that. Last month, it burbled back to life with Depp circled and "Out Of The Furnace" director Scott Cooper attached to helm, and just a couple of weeks later, the project is moving full steam ahead.

Okay, here's a quick recap: you might recall that this summer, Johnny Depp was slated to shoot the Whitey Bulger pic "Black Mass" with director Barry Levinson and co-star Joel Edgerton, but then things went south. Production company Cross Creek Pictures asked Depp—who they were already paying $20 million—to take a pay cut (along with everyone else), when budget went from $50 to $63 million. They couldn't manage to renegotiate his contract and the movie fell apart. But it may be coming back to life.

Transcendence Wally Pfister Rebecca Hall Paul Bettany
"....singularity, is a theoretical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater-than-human intelligence, radically changing civilization, and perhaps human nature. Since the capabilities of such an intelligence may be difficult for a human to comprehend, the technological singularity is often seen as an occurrence (akin to a gravitational singularity) beyond which the future course of human history is unpredictable or even unfathomable." So goes the the first couple lines of the Wikipedia entry on the subject, and the question is: can Wally Pfister turn that thematic material into a big screen, mainstream success in "Transcendence"?
