The Long Ranger
One of the biggest question marks of the summer is Disney's colossal "The Lone Ranger" reboot. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Gore Verbinski, the epic western looks to contemporize the thirties pulp hero for modern audiences, with Armie Hammer donning the mask and white hat of the titular Ranger, with Johnny Depp, once again in kabuki make-up, assuming the role of Tonto, the Ranger's Native American sidekick and trusted friend. It's a big risk (like $250 million big) to spend so much money on a genre that has more or less been regulated to the sidelines. But last night at a special presentation in New York, Disney (along with Bruckheimer and Hammer, who were on hand for the event) previewed twenty minutes of footage from the movie, and made it known that "The Lone Ranger" can easily compete with all the superheroes and comic book movies the summer of 2013 has to offer.

The Long Ranger
Yes, we can be snarky and dare we say even snooty sometimes, but the secret you might not know about the fine folks at The Playlist is that we like a good popcorn blockbuster just like anyone else (when done well). And you know what? Yesterday's trailer for "The Lone Ranger" completely sold us on the movie -- or at least, we're optimistic it's going to be some well executed entertainment. This writer tends to forget that the first "Pirates Of The Caribbean" was actually a whole lot of fun (we won't talk about the sequels) and if Gore Verbinski brings that vitality here, he's going to have a major winner on his hands.

The Lone Ranger, Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer
It seems like it just isn't blockbuster movie season without Johnny Depp wearing funny hats, clothing from Dickensian thrift shops and/or lots of makeup, but this summer he's back with almost all of the above in "The Lone Ranger." The quaint, black-and-white 1950s TV show has been brought to the 21st century with a soaring budget of over $200 million and a bag full of special effects. And now a brand-spanking new trailer has come over the horizon, promising both big time spectacle and Depp quirkiness in equally large servings.

So far, it seems Disney is determined to make sure you don't know that Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer are in "The Lone Ranger." Okay, that's not exactly true. We've had a couple of trailers so far, but in the stills department, not so much, and as you can see from the latest batch above and below, they're going with arty and epic over celebrity.

While superheros will once again dominate the summer season, Disney is hoping that audiences will want to try something a little bit different. Granted, it's a still a movie with Johnny Depp wearing lots of feathers and headgear, but it's in a genre that has traditionally had a mixed track record: the western. However, hoping to tap nostalgia nuts and those looking for a lotta bang for their buck, "The Lone Ranger" is riding over the horizon.

While there's another "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movie on the way, it seems that Johnny Depp is swashbuckling Jack Sparrow style off-screen as well. Much to the surprise of Terry Gilliam, the actor has put his own "Don Quixote" project into development at Disney, and now he's joining another project that has a rival movie on the same subject brewing, with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Before the intriguing possibilities contained within Johnny Depp and Wally Pfister's collaboration on “Transcendence” come to fruition, there's still the matter of the iconic actor's more traditional roles: namely, that of the eccentric, whimsy-tinged adventurer on which he's plied his trade for quite some time, and now is eyeing a return to in the near future for a director well-versed in the type.
