Sundance Review: 'Don Jon's Addiction' Is A Charming & Impressive Directorial Debut From Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Jon Martello is the quintessential modern-day lothario. He and his friends objectify women, rate them on a scale of one to ten and cruise clubs for chicks that they can bed and discard. Jon, in particular, is exceptionally good at wooing the ladies with his muscles, slick-backed hair and cocky charms. His life, as he tells us in voiceover, is all about his friends, the gym, his ride (a Camaro muscle car), his family, church (no, really), girls and pornography. Lots and lots of pornography. Jon is an inveterate and compulsive porn addict, so much so that it prevents him from having a substantial relationship with any female. Jon Martello, in case you missed it, is a total guido from New Jersey, complete with "Jersey Shore "accent.

Yeah, we know. It was only this afternoon that we were talking about how hot Joseph Gordon-Levitt is at the moment, with franchises being thrown left and right at the actor. He's already passed on "Godzilla," and now he's turned down Marvel's "Guardians Of The Galaxy" for the chance to step into Robert Rodriguez's noir soaked world.

It seems everyone wants a piece of Joseph Gordon-Levitt these days. The actor was rumored to play Batman in "Justice League," is on the ever growing list of contenders for "Guardians Of The Galaxy," is hosting the Sundance awards later this month, and now has another franchise being tossed across his very messy desk. Needless to say, dude has options.

Just before the Christmas break, it was reported that Marvel's search for the leading man for their upcoming "Guardians Of The Galaxy" had been narrowed down to Jim Sturgess and "Chuck" star Zachary Levi. However, there was a caveat "that the studio may add a third name into the mix after the holidays." And that's exactly what has happened.

So, about a week ago rumors surfaced that the brewing "Justice League" movie would have the God-like Darkseid as the villain of the superhero team-up movie. But just what will his nefarious plot be? Well, that was fun while it lasted. Kind of. Yesterday, the interwebs threw the rumor signal into the sky as Hitfix claimed with "absolute certainty" that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be the new Batman in "Justice League." But 24 hours later, that word hasn't panned out.

Let the speculatin' begin (again). During the entire press run for Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises," the drum beat played by everyone around the picture, from the director through each member of the cast, was that it was the end. There would be no fourth movie. Christian Bale said he wouldn't suit up again (unless Nolan wanted him to) and even with Joseph Gordon-Levitt revealed to be Robin/the new Batman, the actor insisted that there was no need for any spinoffs. Never say never, we suppose...there may be something transpiring....

While the screenings were canceled last evening because of Hurricane Sandy, BAMCinematek’s IFC Sneaks was in full force on Friday and Saturday nights. Playing seven IFC Films pictures that won’t be in theaters until later this year or 2013 (Abbas Kiarostami's "Like Someone In Love" and Olivier Assayas' "Something In The Air” for example), on Saturday night, BAM and IFC Films unveiled the New York premiere of Walter Salles’ “On The Road.” Salles’ long-time-coming adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal Beat Generation novel was a five year work in progress, and on Saturday evening BAM screened the newly edited 124 minute version (the iteration that ran at Cannes was 2 hours and 20 minutes and some of the main criticisms of that version was its longwinded approach) that will open in theaters in December.
