THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1
"Panem forever," says President Snow in this new teaser for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1," and we're sure the folks at Lionsgate are praying for the same thing. With the YA franchise now headed toward the finale, and the last book split into two films, the series has yet to have a single movie hit the billion dollar mark worldwide, but we'd put good money on that happening by time the story wraps up.

Catching Fire, feature
Now officially the all-time November opening record holder, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" was always a fairly sure thing in terms of box office. But what's more impressive is the advance word on the film (our own included), and the buzz around it, which has been so positive, with it being touted as the rare sequel that improves on the original, and with many going so far as to compare it to "The Empire Strikes Back." (Though, to be honest, we think that comparison is more to do with how open-ended it feels, with the good guys separated and some of them still imperiled, at the film's close.) Some of us might not go quite that far, but certainly director Francis Lawrence has made good on delivering a broader, more nuanced and more layered film than the first, which is fitting considering he was adapting what we'd consider the best of the three books, by quite some distance.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Francis Lawrence is a filmmaker I typically associate with bland proficiency, but “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” – which honestly required nothing more than that to be considered successful -- is something truly remarkable. Easily the most sophisticated and thoughtful franchise film of 2013, Lawrence’s adaptation of the second novel in Suzanne Collins’ young adult series is all-things-to-all-people entertainment, a follow-up that intensifies the first film’s thrills while simultaneously developing its characters, and even more crucially, expanding its themes. The rare sequel that surpasses its predecessor, “Catching Fire” tackles head-on the repercussions of the events of “Hunger Games,” deepening Collins’ cinematic mythology even as it proves that teen-lit is more than capable of tackling complex ideas.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Lest you think Lionsgate is not covering every possible base when it comes to "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," part of the blanket marketing campaign includes a tie in sandwich at Subway. Yes, really. Nothing like a dystopian saga about the 99% under the foot of the 1% to really have you hankering for a horse-meat and plastic-cheese footlong, but I digress. The bottom line is more stuff from the 'Catching Fire' whirlpool of stuff that they want you to see before the movie has arrived, so strap in your eyeballs.

As the red carpets are rolled up and the screening rooms shut for another year, a final few nuggets of casting news reach us from Cannes. First, via The Wrap, is some news on “Rosewater,” the film Jon Stewart is taking 12 weeks off "The Daily Show" this summer to shoot (don’t panic, John Oliver will be hosting in his absence). Despite Stewart’s comedic day job, "Rosewater" is a drama, based on a true story about Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was detained in Iran while covering the 2009 elections there.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
And the night of non-stop teasers and clips ends with the grandaddy and most substantial of them all: "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." And even though it doesn't open for another seven months, Lionsgate clearly feels like they have a big winner on their hands...

When we last saw Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), they had survived the perilous "The Hunger Games" and now they're on a victory lap tour or some such thing. Surely things aren't gonna stay that celebratory and happy in the "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" sequel for long. In fact, in the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' YA novels, Katniss and Peta are dethroned from their respective victory riches and put back into the arena for the most climatic and menacing of the Hunger Games, known as the "Quarter Quell" (whatever) that means. Directed by Francis Lawrence (using IMAX cameras in some segments), a new teasing teaser trailer (which, let's face it, shows next to nothing) has arrived.

The dystopian future of "The Hunger Games" has lots of things, including wild fashion, death matches between adolescents and apparently, a still Photoshop-obsessed culture hell-bent on airbrushing their celebrities into plastic-looking pod people.
