Jude Law is on a bit of a hot streak right now. After his transformed turn as Keira Knightley's cuckolded husband Karenin in Joe Wright's sublime "Anna Karenina," he's now taking on the lead role as a psyschiatrist caught in a mystery in Stephen Soderbergh's "Side Effects," opening on February 8th. We recently caught up with the actor in Los Angeles to chat about "Side Effects," and he also dropped a few hints about some of his upcoming and rumored projects, including Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel," Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert," and a potential third "Sherlock Holmes" film.

Thus far, 2013 has been a major drag for new movies, with January once again proving to be the drop-off zone for movies that studios regret making. But thankfully, February is less than a week away and the cinematic horizon looks a bit brighter. One movie many are already talking about is Steven Soderbergh's penultimate picture, "Side Effects."

It's coming on four years since Werner Herzog's last narrative feature – 2009's "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done" – and it looks like we're in for an even longer wait. Initially slated to start shooting in March in Morocco with Naomi Watts, Robert Pattinson and Jude Law, Herzog's biopic of Gertrude Bell – traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century – in "Queen Of The Desert," seems to be on hold.

“Gangster Squad” may have earned the title of First Major DisappointmentOof 2013, but new movies from both Park Chan-Wook and Steven Soderbergh around the corner, are enough to keep morale high. Park is of course taking a gamble with his first English-language film “Stoker,” but with the Rooney Mara/Channing Tatum thriller “Side Effects,” Soderbergh has his retirement in mind, looking to exit on a high note as two new images and a few choice quotes appear to suggest.

The first two months of the New Year are usually viewed as a dumping ground, but in recent years critical and box office success stories like "Shutter Island" and "Safe House" have shown that it's a quiet frame where genre fare can do tremendously well. That's why we're not worried an iota about Steven Soderbergh's forthcoming "Side Effects," which got the ball rolling a few weeks ago with a pretty fantastic first trailer. And while things are on the down low for the moment, a few more stills from the movie have popped up.

Oh hey, there you are "Anna Karenina." Since unspooling overseas at the tail end of the summer, and hitting TIFF for its North American bow, word has been very, very quiet on Joe Wright's latest effort. And it's a real shame because the movie is both spectacular and moving, doing justice to the emotion in Leo Tolstoy's tale of doomed love, but giving the material an enjoyably indulgent theatrical treatment. The big word on this movie is that it was shot all on a single soundstage with interconnected sets, and while the artificiality shows through sometimes (intentionally), it never detracts from the story or the epic feel of the movie.

Well, we're breathing a bit of a sigh of relief. Just over a week ago it was reported that Werner Herzog's "next project" would be an adaptation of DBC Pierre's "Vernon God Little." It made us a bit worried that his Gertrude Bell biopic had been put on ice, but not only is it still moving, it has a new cast member and a start date on the horizon.

Wes Anderson must be feeling pretty vindicated these days. After a couple of films more cooly received by critics, in "The Life Aquatic" and "The Darjeeling Limited," and a charming animated film that unfortunately flopped at the box office, Anderson needed to come back strong, and fortunately, that's exactly what he did with this year's "Moonrise Kingdom," still one of the year's most widely liked films, and the idiosyncratic director's most successful picture since "The Royal Tenenbaums."
