Review: 'What Maisie Knew' Is Deeply Affecting, Hard To Watch

It’s often an easy way to handicap your film, by centering it on a child character and demanding a great deal from the young actor. By definition, children are not fully-formed people, but a character in a film must be either fully-formed to yield proper dramatic results, or so uniquely authentic that it’s like catching chaos in a bottle, an approach that can create a serious cognitive dissonance when youth collides with seasoned actors. Remarkably, such chaos is present in young Onata Aprile, the title character of “What Maisie Knew,” an affecting new contemporary drama that never once feels phony when the camera is fixed on her face.

Hollywood’s goal of remaking every single horror film of the last forty years appears to be going strong. The latest victim is “Carrie.” Granted, the casting of Chloe Moretz as the title character and Julianne Moore as her mother sounds great on paper, especially with Kimberly Peirce ("Boys Don’t Cry") at the helm. But the first full trailer for the movie, released earlier this month, didn’t leave many people hopeful, nor did it leave much to the imagination. Now, new images from the film have arrived, once again confirming that Chloe Moretz will be drenched in blood, in case you had no idea.

We have to admit, we were kinda worried. Last month, Rachel Weisz dropped out of David Cronenberg's brewing "Maps To The Stars," the project that would reteam him with his "Cosmopolis" lead Robert Pattinson. The plan was to shoot the movie next month, but with Cronenberg recently taking a role in "I Am Love" helmer Luca Guadagnino's adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel "The Body Artist," lensing this summer, we wondered about the status of 'Maps.' Turns out, we have nothing to worry about.

This weekend, a young girl goes into the woods and comes out covered in blood after 90 minutes or so of sheer mayhem. And while "Carrie" may not have to employ the use of a chainsaw, she's got some other powers on hand that nonetheless will still leave things ending just as red.

Earlier today there was the trailer for "The Purge," a movie that we didn't know was happening because it was so far off our radar. And then there's "The English Teacher," a movie this writer initially mistook for "Writers" aka "Stuck In Love," due to the (omnipresence?) of Greg Kinnear and Lily Collins. But just like that movie, it's another indie dramedy where good looking people can't seem to sort out their love life. And frankly, we expect much better from you, Julianne Moore.

What do we know about "The English Teacher"? Well, it's good a good cast for one, starring Julianne Moore, Michael Angarano, Greg Kinnear, Lily Collins and Nathan Lane. Directed by Craig Zisk -- a TV vet who's helmed episodes of "Parks and Recreation," "New Girl," "United States of Tara," "The Office," "Nip/Tuck" and more - the picture centers on a English teacher's life that is disrupted when a former student returns to her small town after failing as a playwright in New York.

And on the eve of the first night, actor/writer/director Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a message for us. His upcoming directorial debut, a type of porn-addiction dramedy, formerly known as "Don Jon's Addiction," will simply be now known as "Don Jon."

Aside from perhaps "The Ladykillers" (and even that film features a great Tom Hanks performance, at least), it's hard to find at least one Coen Brothers movie that doesn't have passionate supporters that declare it the best thing the directing duo ever made. From debut "Blood Simple" to the recent megahit western "True Grit," every Coen picture has its advocate (this writer has an unconditional adoration of their 1994 commercial disaster "The Hudsucker Proxy," for instance). But none of their films are more beloved than "The Big Lebowski."

Boasting a kinship with "The Kids Are All Right" by sharing the same producers, if anything "What Maisie Knew" does indeed look like it will be another look at modern relationships warts and all. And it also shares Julianne Moore, who stars here, once again as a mother, albeit with an altogether different set of circumstances surrounding her child and how she'll press on when her family unit is ruptured.

If you're scratching your head and wondering where this seemingly random Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers horror "6 Souls" came from, we'll set the record straight. This is actually a long shelved horror from all the way back in 2010 that was originally titled "Shelter." In fact, the movie already went straight-to-DVD in Canada two years ago, and for whatever reason, it's now finally getting a release in the U.S. But things like this are held back for a reason...
