Tribeca Review: 'A Case Of You' Is A Painfully Insipid Rom-Com For The Social Media Generation

It was only a matter of time before someone tried to fully exploit our current social media communication age for the evils of the generic romantic comedy and "A Case Of You," a new Justin Long-led rom-com, does just that; abusing the Facebook platform to create the first creepy FB stalker comedy. Somehow, everything creepy and vile in this Kat Coiro-directed comedy ("L!fe Happens") is meant to seem comically cute and not the restraining-order freaky that it clearly is. Like all of these meretricious and morally-reprehensible culture-farts, it’s presented as harmless and adorable at heart, but as the central quintessentially dorky character becomes more and more fawning and subservient, the actors themselves seem border on queasiness.

It’s been a few years since the last major Stephen King film adaptation, the Frank Darabont-helmed “The Mist,” but that doesn’t mean studios haven’t been trying get in on the lucrative King business, and the past year alone has seen several different projects based on King’s books continue in development including the ill-fated and ambitious “The Dark Tower,” the Ben Affleck-helmed “The Stand” and Cary Fukunaga's "It" among others. Now it looks like another adaptation of King’s works is closer to reality.

Receiving his big break in the 2001 Victor Salva-helmed “Jeepers Creepers,” actor Justin Long has since made a name of his dopey brand of humor in comedies like “Accepted” and “Dodgeball,” while also mixing it up with supporting roles in genre fare like “Drag Me To Hell” and “Live Free or Die Hard.” Though it’s Long’s next role that may serve as a major profile upgrade on the actor’s resume if all goes accordingly.

TIFF '11 Review: 'Ten Year' Brings Together A Strong Cast For A Mixed Bag Of Comedy & Drama

Births, funerals, marriage, anniversaries and even annual vacations have all served as plot devices in the reunion film, a genre that usually finds middle-aged or older characters dealing with a crisis that is exacerbated by seeing old family and friends. And while "Ten Year" certainly isn't breaking new territory, producer and star Channing Tatum, along with writer/director Jamie Linden ("Dear John"), do take an interesting approach. Wisely not going far beyond their own age bracket, this film brings together a pretty solid ensemble cast of some of the best up-and-coming actors working right now for a tale that catches up with a gaggle of friends for a reunion -- you guessed it -- ten years after their graduation from high school. Taking on a bunch of characters as they leave their twenties is definitely a smart concept but instead of offering what could have been an honest look at contemporary soon-to-be thirtysomethings and the challenges, fears and triumphs they have endured, "Ten Year" delivers a mixed bag of CW plots that at worst are cliché and predictable, with a very few that do stand out.

Ok, it's not the greatest title in the world by far, but it's an interesting cast. Justin Long, Jess Weixler (the Sundance hit “Teeth,” "Peter and Vandy"), Tyler Labine (“Mad Love”), and Addison Timlin (“Californication”) will all star in "Lumpy," the directorial debut of writer Ted Koland (the TV shows "Saints & Sinners," "Fashion House") according to a just-released statement.

There’s not a lot of information yet, but a report about Justin Long’s new production company revealed that he would be starring in a new film, “Chronicle,” alongside John Hawkes and Ryan Philippe. According to the Gramery Park Pictures website, Mickey Rourke, Helena Bonham Carter, Kate Mara, Danny Masterson and Vincent D'Onofrio were in discussions to join the cast as of last month, but no word if they will be signing on or have simply moved on (our guess is probably the latter).
