Inside Llewyn Davis, Oscar Isaac
Long hours on the road, sleeping on sofas, eating very little, playing shows for little money; it's a wonder why anyone struggles to make it as a musician. But for Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) there really isn't any other option to playing music. "...And what, just exist?" he counters, when his sister suggests he stops couch surfing, borrowing money and barely getting by, and re-enter the Merchant Marine. While Llewyn can't quite put into words the passion that sustains an existence perpetually on the fringes, hustling for the next dollar, it's that weary energy that drives the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis."

So here's some interesting news of the day: Bob Balaban is producing a remake of the musical "South Pacific." It's a bit surprising considering his credits as a producer thus far have been few, with "Gosford Park" the most notable, but yeah, he's hoping to give the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical a contemporary big screen redo. And he's found someone to possibly be his new Mitzi Gaynor.

OK, slightly old news. We already knew that members of Mumford and Sons were collaborating with Justin Timberlake, Oscar Isaac and the cast members of the Coen Brothers' '60s folk scene movie "Inside Llewyn Davis." The likely connection is that lead Son, Marcus Mumford, is married to the film's co-lead Carey Mulligan and well, he's a pretty well-respected musician to boot.

So what does David Fincher do after directing and executive producing a thirteen-hour political drama? He puts on a "Suit & Tie" of course. As we reported not too long ago, Fincher reteamed with his "The Social Network" star Justin Timberlake to helm the video for the first single from the actor's return to music, The 20/20 Experience. And now it has arrived, and it's pretty slick little thing.

It's hard to belive that it was seven years ago when Justin Timberlake dropped FutureSex/LoveSounds, his chart topping sophomore album, but since then the pop star turned actor, lining up parts in a wide range of films from the B-movie sleze of "Black Snake Moan," to the comedies "Bad Teacher" and "Friends With Benefits," to the sci-fi "In Time" and the baseball drama "Trouble With The Curve." And while 2013 will see him appear in the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis," Timberlake is headed back to where he started, with a new album The 20/20 Experience dropping in the spring. And he's roped in the helmer who helped him achieve his finest performance to date, to lens the first video for the album.

Fresh off a surprise private screening announcement and the excellent trailer that accompanied it, the Coen Brothers' latest, “Inside Llewyn Davis,” has splashed back onto our radars in a massive way. Set to capture the '60s Greenwich Village folk music scene in stunning visuals and the duo's signature dialogue, the aim is to stop right there regarding well-worn attributes, and now a few new images and quotes from Joel Coen are here to show us how.

While "Trouble With Curve" was manipulative dramatic drivel, the film wasn't without its merits, most notably watching Justin Timberlake prove he's got an easy onscreen charisma that hasn't really been well served in any movie projects he's done thus far outside of "The Social Network" and arguably "Bad Teacher" (though the Coens' forthcoming "Inside Llewyn Davis" will likely change that). But the combination of a Black List script and a quality director could turn things around.

On the last day of the Republican National Convention, it's possible that that sound you heard was that of heart palpitations over at Warner Bros' marketing department. After seemingly retiring from acting after "Gran Torino," Clint Eastwood used a gap in his schedule caused by the delay to his remake of "A Star Is Born" to return to the front of the camera, starring in the directorial debut of long-time collaborator Robert Lorenz. And given his immense star power, the fact that he's never won a Best Actor Oscar, and the bait-y subject matter (Eastwood plays a veteran baseball coach leading his sight), many thought the performance, if not the film, could be one to watch in the awards race this time around.

Even though little has been heard from the film, upcoming baseball drama "Trouble with the Curve" will mark Clint Eastwood's first on-screen role since 2008's "Gran Torino." It will also be the first time since 1993's "In the Line of Fire" that he isn't directing himself. But he's got a trusted friend and collaborator behind the camera in Robert Lorenz -- making his directorial debut here -- who has worked as an assistant director to Eastwood on "Mystic River" and "Million Dollar Baby" and is partner with Clint at his shingle Malpaso Productions.
