Thor: The Dark World
The first "Thor" movie was something of a risk for Marvel. Wisecracking Robert Downey Jr. in a (relatively) grounded real world setting was one thing, but a Viking god from space, played by a complete unknown and directed by a man best known for Shakespeare adaptations was quite another. But the 2011 film, while flawed in many ways, proved surprisingly entertaining and teed up both its title character and his villainous brother Loki for a return appearance in the team-up movie "The Avengers," which turned out to be an absolute megahit. As such, the studio must be feeling on surer ground with "Thor: The Dark World."

The Marvel train is now on full throttle, and even when a movie isn't in theaters, it's arriving on DVD or there's news about the next superhero flick or there's something else to check out. You have to hand it to the studio, they've developed the brand into something that's always somewhere in the pop culture sphere, and it's something that helped "The Avengers" become a massive worldwide phenomenon. And so even though the Marvel Phase One box set was delayed, the savvy folks at the company have turned yesterday's announcement of a new release date into an opportunity to keep talking about "Thor."

Considering every actor who signs in blood for a Marvel is usually optioned for numerous flicks, this bit of news hardly comes as a surprise, though it is interesting to note how much the stature of Kat Dennings has changed in just a short year.

And More We Learned From The Filmmakers Of 'Thor'"Thor" is swinging its mighty hammer into cinemas this weekend, and it may be a surprise to many moviegoers, proving to be a lighter, jauntier superhero film that the material might suggest. The cast and filmmakers did the press rounds, and as usual, bits and pieces about what might be in store for the future Marvel universe were hinted at, but also just as intriguingly, the process on making "Thor" was brought to the fore as well. Playlist writer Leah Zak spoke with Marvel guru Kevin Feige in an interview as well as participating in group conversations with the rest of the "Thor" team and here's what we learned.

The summer of superheroes is about to kick off, and it's only a matter of days until the world gets its first look at "Thor," Marvel's latest piece of an insanely ambitious five-film plan building towards next summer's team-up movie, "The Avengers." And for some time, it looked like the film had an uphill battle ahead of it -- last year's "Iron Man 2" was, at best, a disappointment, and early looks at "Thor" had veered from the underwhelming to the silly. But ahead of its release in some parts of the world next week, and the States on May 6th, the film has now screened, with the world premiere taking place in Sydney last night, and critics there, as well as in London, where the film unspooled last week, and L.A, where a very select group of geek press were shown the picture, have weighed in. So, what's the word?

Canadian indie-pic "Daydream Nation" starring Kat Dennings, Reece Thompson ("Ceremony"), Andie MacDowell and Josh Lucas looks... well, OK. It looks "Juno"-esque for lack of a better way to put it and that's either a plus or a minus, depending on who you are. The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and we suppose we're curious to see how it actually turned out as we missed it during the festival.

While Kat Dennings will be making her big screen leap into franchise fare this summer starring in "Thor," she's got another project on the way that's keeping her indie cred intact.
