Guardians Of The Galaxy
At what point does Marvel's universe building go from being an integral part of a given film's storyline to a box they have check with each movie churned out by the studio? Some would argue it's reached that point already, and the following intel suggests Kevin Feige and co. are cramming characters into spaces they don't necessarily need to be in.

Oculus
If there's one certainty in the horror genre, it's that trends will come and go. Some strain of horror will be popular for a few years, then disappear just as quickly, waiting for its moment of reinvention or cultural relevance. The genre's recent past has been dominated by two forces: the torture-porn subgenre, in which our anxieties about war atrocities translate, somewhat clumsily, to movies where people spend whole running times getting pieces of their bodies lobbed off. The other, equally powerful force in horror movies has been the "found footage" genre, again translating our cultural queasiness when it comes to technology and turning it into something positively supernatural. But thanks to last summer's surprise blockbuster "The Conjuring," it looks like those are being shoved aside in favor of good old-fashioned haunted house spookiness. "Oculus" is a perfect example of this newly relevant style, and the results are damn scary.

One of SXSW's small but pleasant surprises was haunted house horror “Oculus” (our review), which arrives on screens this spring. As we note in our review, haunted houses are having a bit of a moment thanks to “The Conjuring” and arguably “The Purge,” which isn't strictly about a haunted house but has some of the structural elements of those films.

Oculus
There are certain things horror movies have taught us over the years: don't go in the basement, don't go to the cabin in the woods, don't investigate whatever is making that weird noise in the dark. They have also taught us that mirrors are perhaps best left alone, particularly if they are big and creepy and covered in a sheet. Except if you're the folks in "Oculus."

"I saw 'The Exorcist' by myself when I was way too young," former "Doctor Who" star Karen Gillan told Yahoo. But that hasn't kept the actress from the genre, and she takes the lead in the upcoming "Oculus," with horror flick making some buzz last year at TIFF, where it nabbed the runner up prize for the Midnight Madness People's Choice Award. And now you can get a sense of what captured the attention of viewers last fall.

Review: 'Riddick' Starring Vin Diesel, Katee Sackhoff, And Karl Urban

Riddick
"Pitch Black," released by Universal in 2000 to little fanfare, was a small-scale genre movie that took almost everyone who saw it by surprise. It featured a nifty conceit (space travelers are marooned on a hostile alien world inhabited by nocturnal predators days before a lengthy solar eclipse) and an agreeably asshole-ish antihero in Riddick (Vin Diesel), a gruff prisoner who escapes in the crash. The problem, of course, was that Universal mistakenly took a cult phenomenon for the stuff of big budget crossover material, and when "The Chronicles of Riddick" opened in 2004, it was clogged with "world building" nonsense and ornate production design that was halfway between "Dune" and "Dungeons & Dragons."

So that all-female style "The Expendables" is actually becoming a thing. Last month, Gina Carano was the first name on board the movie, and now another actress has joined her, bringing some geek cred to the production.

Oh, so we guess that new "Chronicles Of Riddick" movie is happening after all. After pre-production was abruptly shut down in Montreal late last fall, and then started up again before the end of the year, it appears it's all systems go at Universal for Vin Diesel and David Twohy as the project, which last we heard was waiting a greenlight, now appears to be on the move.
