Imitation Game
We may be in the sticky heat of July, but eyes are already turned to the awards season. Tomorrow, the Toronto International Film Festival will be unveiling the first titles of their slate, and it will be an interesting window into what the studios will be trotting out as their contenders. And one that is still in play for Toronto (and its competitors) is The Weinstein Company's "The Imitation Game," and the first trailer is here to show you why they paid $7 million for the rights earlier this year.

Laggies
Director Lynn Shelton has carved out a career of telling intimate stories driven by complex characters, with tales that toe the line between drama and comedy, and easily fall into both camps. And while most of her films had tended to stick to the indie circuit, her upcoming "Laggies" has a chance to find a bigger audience.

Begin Again
Though the music industry has undergone a sea change over the last decade, the goal for both major studios and artists remains the same: musicians want to write great songs and put them out into the world, and record labels want to make some money by helping them do it. That being said, these days, the line is sharply drawn between genuine songwriters and visionaries and corporate processed pop stars. Moreover, solo acts or groups no longer need the crumbling machine of the industry to get their work out there and recognized. The internet has more than enough avenues to turn overnight bedroom performers into the next blogosphere buzz act. A&R scouts are a dying breed. But for argument's sake, you'll need to pretend that world of major label nurturing, and the hunt for the next great thing still exists for "Begin Again."

Begin Again
It premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival under the title of “Can A Song Save Your Life?” and now, over half a year later, "Once" director John Carney’s latest will finally be hitting North American screens as “Begin Again.” Ahead of the musical romance film’s release later this week, The Weinstein Company has unloaded new TV spots, clips and featurettes to get you away from the multiplex and into the art house.

Imitation Game
If you’re on Oscar watch, just dreading the summer season, what fall film are you anticipating the most? Well, it could be “The Imitation Game” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Directed by Morten Tyldum (the Norwegian film director behind "Headhunters" starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), the movie is about the brilliant English mathematician and logician, Alan Turing who helped crack and decipher Nazi codes during World War II who was later prosecuted for being gay (though whether that’ll be charted in the movie is unclear). Either way, it’s pretty complex material for Cumberbatch to sink his teeth into.

Begin Again, Keira Knightley
These days the concept of a demo tape, that you play for people and give to record executives has greatly changed. Firstly, you don't even need any kind of physical media because you can get your stuff up on any number of streaming sites. And hell, who even needs record execs when you can set a download price and hustle your record yourself, while cutting out the middle man who'll take most of your money anyway? But, you'll have pretend that getting signed is a still a pretty big deal to roll with "Begin Again."

Begin Again, Keira Knightley
A movie set against the backdrop of the music industry today seems a bit... out of place. Any artist of real worth or integrity doesn't want or need the corporate machine, with plenty of healthy indie avenues to go where their talent will be rewarded and they won't see their money disappear into a black hole of accounting. But for the sake of "Begin Again," the music industry is still a thing, and one down-and-out producer hopes to help a songwriter make it big.
