Something black and acidic runs through the veins of those McDonagh brothers; there’s just something not quite right with these lads...and thank goodness for that. Playwright and younger sibling Martin McDonagh made a splash in Ireland’s theater scene with his hilarious, tart, pitch-black plays and then impressed film audiences with two wicked black comedies (“In Bruges” and “Seven Psychopaths”). Older bro John Michael McDonagh possesses a similar talent, and an ear for devilish dialogue, and having penned “Ned Kelly,” he made his feature-length debut with the cheeky, underrated black comedy “The Guard” (underrated internationally, that is; the film is the most successful Irish film of all time in Ireland). If you don’t know these guys, you need to remedy that immediately.

There are few directors who could find comedy in the premise of a priest who has been mysteriously told by an unidentified man that he'll be killed. But then perhaps you're not familiar with John Michael McDonagh, who put himself on the cinematic map with outrageous "The Guard," and returns with "Calvary." And today we have a batch of exclusive pics from the film.

Review: 'Chinese Puzzle' Starring Romain Duris & Audrey Tautou Is A Fitting End To Cédric Klapisch's Trilogy

Chinese Puzzle
Cédric Klapisch’s “L’Auberge Espagnole” and “Russian Dolls” weren’t really begging for a third and final entry in the global adventures of Xavier (Romain Duris), but it doesn’t make “Chinese Puzzle” any less enjoyable. What’s impressive is that despite the sometimes heavy subject matter—divorce, creative crisis and trying to find an affordable 2BR in New York City—Klapisch’s film is light and fizzy, set to a soundtrack of funk and salsa. We’ll claim that we laughed throughout the film, but we were probably heard full-on giggling with delight.

The year isn't even half over, but it's been a pretty good one for "The Guard" writer/director John Michael McDonagh. The filmmaker arrived in Sundance with his latest "Calvary" and got some great reviews (we said it was "soaring close to something divine") and then the movie headed to the Berlin Film Festival where it snapped up the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. Not too bad at all, and now Fox Searchlight is getting ready to give everyone a taste, with the movie due soon, and a new trailer arriving today.

Already megawatt stars in France, Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris have seen their star shine across international borders too. And together they make a pretty attractive package. While they most recently teamed for Michel Gondry's "Mood Indigo," the duo are perhaps best known for their ensemble dramedies with director Cédric Klapisch, "Pot Luck" and "Russian Dolls." And they've once again teamed with the filmmaker for another tale in the saga started in those movies.

Heaven Is Real
Ever since "The Passion Of The Christ," studios have been chasing the religious dollar and that's probably no more evident than 2014 delivering a pair of blockbuster Bible movies: Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" and Ridley Scott's "Exodus." And while few of the God-fearing movies that have come since 'Passion' have been smash successes (they've mostly been in the vein of minor hits like "Soul Surfer"), that doesn't mean they won't keep trying. So here's "Heaven Is For Real," a movie that puts its whole premise right in the title.

One of the most exciting things about the coming of the fall movie season is the chance to see some new talent emerge from some of the prestige fare that'll be hitting theaters in the next few months. Last year, for instance, saw the likes of Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, Eddie Redmayne, Rooney Mara, Shailene Woodley, Elizabeth Olsen and Felicity Jones go from virtual unknowns to, if not household names, than certainly performers whose next moves would be watched closely.
