Review: Race And Class Issues Clash With Lowbrow Comedy In 'Peeples'

You’d be forgiven if you expected Tyler Perry to influence a large chunk of “Peeples,” the latest film to carry his name like a neon sign promising broad comedy and aggressive but dubious morality. Even the beginning seems to hum with the predictable rhythms of Perry’s multi-movie empire, with a dark screen soundtracked to the purr of a man’s voice introducing a particularly holy gospel tune. It’s a clever strategy for writer-director Tina Gordon Chism, who soon reveals that this is comic actor Craig Robinson, crooning to a classroom filled with children about the need to avoid urinating on others. At once, you’re assured that this film is going to explore places Perry normally wouldn’t dare… and surely places maybe you wouldn’t seek either.

Trilogy! Hollywood loves everything in threes and this week seems to be no exception. Of course, there's the announcement today of the new "Star Wars" trilogy coming for your wallet starting in 2015, and just yesterday, Quentin Tarantino revealed his upcoming "Django Unchained" might be the middle part of trilogy sandwich starting with "Inglorious Basterds." Well, until we find out if that will actually happen or will be a continual question mark like "Kill Bill 3," some new pics from "Django Unchained" have dropped.

We're still months and months away from the Oscars, but the other awards ceremony of the moving image is starting to sneak up; two weeks from today, the nominations for the Primetime Emmys, the biggest awards honoring television comedies, dramas, miniseries and movies, will be announced, ahead of the ceremony itself in September. Given the stars that the small screen attracts these days, it's just as glitzy as the Academy Awards, and given that we're living in what's generally deemed to be something of a golden age of television, there are more good shows on the air than could possibly be honored in a single ceremony. Someone's going to miss out.

The biggest story of the last week, by a mile, was the debut of the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino's sure-to-be-controversial Western "Django Unchained." Starring Jamie Foxx as the title character, a slave out to rescue his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), with Christoph Waltz as his companion, Dr. King Schultz and Leonardo DiCaprio as one of the villains, Calvin Candie, it was one of the most anticipated films of the year before hand, but the excellent teaser clip has certainly raised expectations even further.

While nothing is official on Quentin Tarantino's highly anticipated slave/western/vengeance flick "Django Unchained," this is the way it's shaping so far: Jamie Foxx would play the titular Django, who under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz, squares off against Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) the brutal owner of mixed race club and his top slave, the manipulative Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), in order to free his wife Broomhilda...which brings us to this latest bit of news.
