What Worked & What Didn't In Season One Of David Fincher & Kevin Spacey's 'House Of Cards'

Ten days ago, Beau Willimon, David Fincher, Kevin Spacey and Netflix hoped to change the future of television with "House of Cards," the first high-profile series to be produced by, and air exclusively on, the streaming platform. A remake of the late 1980s BBC miniseries (itself based on the book by Michael Dobbs), the 13-part first season of "House Of Cards" was adapted by "The Ides Of March" co-writer Beau Willimon who developed the series for Netflix. Executive-produced by Fincher, who also directed the first two episodes, with Spacey leading a cast that also includes Robin Wright, Corey Stoll, Kate Mara nad many more.

When Netflix announced that they would get into the scripted programming game, with three high profile projects all lined up for the first half of 2013 (including the Eli Roth literary-based Gothic horror project "Hemlock Grove" and the hopefully rapturous return of oddball comedy classic "Arrested Development"), it seemed that the possibilities, in theory, were endless. Netflix would be unburdened by the restraints, in both content and form, of the tired old ad revenue-dependent television model (premium cable, while remaining fuzzier, still depends on subscribers), free to provocatively reshape our formalized notion of "television" and "shows." Except, that didn't happen. At least not yet. It's first big, splashy original production, a David Fincher, Kevin Spacey and Eric Roth produced remake of the British miniseries "House Of Cards," doesn't take any bold structural or stylistic detours. But it is totally fucking brilliant just the same.

Do you have plans next weekend? Well, you might want to cancel them. In case you forgot, on February 1st, Netflix is dropping the David Fincher-produced and directed (well, the first two episodes anyway) political drama series "House Of Cards" in its entirely. That's right, every episode will be available. If there's a better way to beat the winter cold than with a marathon of that show, we don't know what it is. But morever, it appears that Netflix is in for the long haul on this one.

Since March of 2011, Netflix has been slowly dipping its toes into original TV programming, starting off with the underwhelming (“Lilyhammer”) and moving on to the guaranteed triumph (“Arrested Development”). One of the more curious offerings, however, is "House of Cards," David Fincher's exec-produced political series starring Kevin Spacey. Some new images and a few choice quotes have surfaced to shed light on the drama.

So, welcome to the future of television. David Fincher's upcoming "House Of Cards" isn't coming to you on some national network or cable channel, but instead through Netflix, the rental and streaming service that is now headed into original programming. it's only natural that members get a sneak peek first, and the first trailer for the series has dropped over on Netflix Instant.

After a flurry of activity, with four films in five years (having taken the previous fifteen years to make his first five movies) between 2007's "Zodiac" and 2011's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," David Fincher hasn't been in a rush to pick his next movie. There's a number of possibilities in the mix -- among them the 'Dragon Tattoo' sequel "The Girl Who Played With Fire," and the long-gestating "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" -- but none have, publicly at least, made great strides towards production, so we're unlikely to see a new film from the director until the middle of 2014 at the earliest.

It's safe to say that "L.A. Confidential" wasn't greeted with especially high expectations in the run up to its release. James Ellroy's 1990 book, the third of his "L.A. Quartet" (preceded by "The Black Dahlia" and "The Big Nowhere," and completed by "White Jazz") was a favorite among crime fans, but hardly a best seller. Screenwriter Brian Helgeland was known only for "Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" and a rewrite of actioner "Assassins." Director Curtis Hanson was well-liked, but mostly known for mid-level programmers like "Bad Influence," "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle" and "The River Wild." And the cast was led by two virtual unknowns from the Southern Hemisphere, with the most recognizable names in the cast being Kim Basinger, whose career was a little on the outs, comedy actor Danny DeVito and recently Oscar-nominated character actor Kevin Spacey.
