Kirsten Dunst Says Sci-Fi Romance 'Upside Down' Is Like An Accessible 'Brazil'

For a moment there, it seemed like Kirsten Dunst might have found her career floundering in the wake of the Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy, but not only has the actress found her footing, her upcoming roster of films would be the envy of any thesp in Hollywood. There is no better indication than "Melancholia" that Dunst is moving in a new direction. While opinion may be split on Lars Von Trier's film, there is no denying that Dunst's turn in the lead role is easily the best performance of her career, and those on the Croisette thought so too as she walked home with the Best Actress prize this spring. And unlike the events in the film, the future for Dunst after "Melancholia" is looking very bright with a number of promising projects on the horizon.

Another day, another right turn to the ridiculously stupid fall-out from Lars Von Trier's "nazi" statements. Good old humorless reporters at Cannes loved raking noted provocateur Lars Von Trier over the coals for his joking "pro-Nazi" stance before the organization dubbed him persona non grata. The next step, of course, is the reaction from other filmmakers. This should be fun.

Two years after Lars Von Trier caused a major stir at Cannes with his contentious "Antichrist," the enfant terrible returns to the Croisette in a much more subdued mood with "Melancholia." Despite the premise, which sounds tailor-made for Von Trier to provoke and prod his audience, the film is easily the most restrained the director has been "Europa." Essentially shock free, the operatic, three act film plays more like an Ingmar Bergman chamber piece than anything else and the biggest surprise is just how contemplative Von Trier is this time around.

So, when he told the Cannes press conference that followed the first screening of his latest picture, the apocalyptic "Melancholia," that "My next film, and Kirsten [Dunst] demanded it, will be porn. That's how women are. Really hard core. That's what I'm writing now," while sat next to the ashen-faced "Spider-Man" star, you'll forgive us for not taking him too seriously. Well, that was fun while it lasted. As you no doubt heard over the Easter weekend, the blogosphere lit up when a Twitter account supposedly belonging to Francis Ford Coppola's production company American Zoetrope tweeted, "Happy to announce that Kirsten Dunst has agreed to be in Sofia Coppola‘s new film ‘Secret Door’. Script is still being finished. Stay tuned!” Sounded too good to be true -- and indeed, that was the case.

Update: Sorry, Coppola fans, looks like we've been had by a hoaxer. When we ran the story yesterday, the account looked genuine enough, but subsequent tweets were more suspicious, in particular 8 pages of script 'leaked' onto the account, 8 pages of some of the worst writing we've ever seen (Sample: "It was he, I pondered most of"). With the legitimacy looking increasingly fishy, we have now confirmed with Kirsten Dunst's reps that this project is indeed a hoax. We're not quite sure who has the goddamn time to write a script pretending to be Sofia Coppola, but there we go. Apologies.
