If any film at Cannes this year faced the most fevered anticipation, it was Walter Salles' "On The Road." Not just because the project had been over thirty years in the making, and was based on a beloved, groundbreaking novel, but also because it features an exciting young cast lead by "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart, "Tron: Legacy" lead Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley from "Control," with a strong supporting roster including Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Terrence Howard, and more.

Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" has been heralded for decades: an important novel, a cultural signifier, a sociological landmark, a cracking good read. It's also been considered "unfilmable" -- but now Walter Salles ("The Motorcycle Diaries," "Dark Water") brings the novel to the screen, and "The Motorcycle Diaries" turns out to be a pretty good template for understanding how Salles has shot his adaptation. "On the Road," like 'Diaries,' is scenic and episodic, full of youth's passion but with a shade of the future yet to come dimming the brightness of its vision, as a charismatic young man travels with another young man, saying little but watching everything along the way.

We are a little over thirteen hours away from the world premiere of on "On The Road," perhaps the single most anticipated, or at least the longest anticipated, film of the Cannes Film Festival. And of all the question marks about the movie, the biggest for us has been the young principal cast: Sam Riley, Garret Hedlund, Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst have all done good work in the past, but are still relatively untested with material like this. Could they embody the beatnik dream of Jack Kerouac's novel?

Cannes is officially underway, which means we're now less than a week from the arrival of one of the most long-awaited films in the history of the medium: the adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road." Francis Ford Coppola wanted to direct a version of the book for decades, but having presumably decided he'd rather faff around with Val Kilmer and an iPad, passed it over to "The Motorcylce Diaries"'' Walter Salles. And from everything we've seen so far, it looks like Salles might have pulled it off, or at least come close.

The long, difficult journey from page to screen for Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" has been well-documented over the years, and one thing that has been consistent throughout is the passion and love evinced for the novel by all involved --particularly the godfather of it all, Francis Ford Coppola, who acquired the novel's rights back in 1978 at the height of his success.

While both RPatz and KStew are heading to the Cannes Film Festival next month (sorry Taylor, maybe next year, right?) here's a bracing reminder of why anybody cares about these two in the first place: "Twilight."

So, will the romance of the open road, and a whole other America waiting in the distance in "On The Road" inspire young people everywhere to journey across this land? Or at the very least get them to read Jack Kerouac's book? That remains to be seen, but the spirit of the beats is alive in the upcoming film from Walter Salles.
