Rudderless
Very often music is used as a motivation in films as well as a compositional tool. Earlier this year, Keira Knightley used music to get over a break-up and a head start on her road to fame in "Begin Again," and in "Rudderless," a box of old demo tapes will be key to solving one man's grief.

The Signal
There is a desire at the heart of William Eubank's slick sci-fi picture "The Signal" to transcend the trappings of genre conventions and embrace the lyricism most often ascribed to mah-ture cinema. Eubank's background as a cinematographer doubtlessly contributes to the assured visual style on display, though David Lanzenberg ("Celeste and Jesse Forever") serves as DP here. Significantly less confident is the writing, offering up a thinly sketched protagonist and a collection of cast mates working with spare (some would say understated) material; the resulting film is lovingly crafted but insubstantial flash, though the mystery at heart sustains a first viewing.

A lot of movies play the Sundance Film Festival so we're not able to see everything, and "The Signal" was one of those things we missed this year. But perhaps we should have tried harder to make this one. The first trailer for the mysterious sci-fi thriller is here, and the combination of dazzling visuals and an enigmatic hook has grabbed our attention.

Hannibal
Already burned through "House Of Cards"? Trying to figure out what to get into next with only two episodes left to go of "True Detective"? You might want to give "Hannibal" a spin. Though not perfect, the first season of the NBC series was a pretty entertaining and smart piece of pulp overall, led by a pitch perfect performance by Mads Mikkelsen in the title role. And with a cliffhanger ending that saw the tables turned on FBI agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), it's a helluva starting point for the second season. Only we didn't realize just how bracing that kick off to the new batch of episodes will be.

Laurence Fishburne Morpheus Kia
No, we have no idea who is playing this weekend during the Super Bowl, but there will be touchdowns, pre-game shows, wings, nachos and heartburn for millions across the country. But for the rest us, we'll be waiting for the Game Day trailers and ads that will be the water cooler conversation material on Monday.

Having worked with folks like Steven Spielberg, the Coen Brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Mamet, Gus Van Sant and more, William H. Macy has no shortage of experience to draw on as he makes his feature directorial debut. But first, he'll need to get a cast together and he's done just that.

Add one more to the pile. Quentin Tarantino's "what if?" abandoned projects list is long. Ideas that he once toyed with included more Elmore Leonard adaptations, the James Bond film “Casino Royale,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E,” an untitled '70s-like airplane/disaster movie and more (you can see a longer list in this old detailed feature we made back in the day).

Since the first announcement of NBC’s move to adapt Thomas Harris’ “Hannibal” to the small screen, we’ve been on the fence, but the show is quickly shaping up to be one to watch. After signing up Mads Mikkelsen to play the titular role opposite Hugh Dancy’s FBI agent Will Graham, the show has now added Laurence Fishburne, last seen on the small screen in “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” as “Jack Crawford, the head of the FBI’s behavioral sciences unit.”
