Judd Apatow Thinking About A Truffaut-Style 'This Is 40' Continuation Following His Kids To College

"This Is 40" might have been overshadowed by its Christmas competition somewhat, and picked up reviews as similarly mixed as its predecessor "Funny People," but having made a healthy $66 million in the U.S. so far before opening in most of the rest of the world, it's certainly signified that Judd Apatow ain't licked yet. The film was the director's first semi-sequel, picking up on some of the characters from "Knocked Up" five years down the line, and while we're sure his next directorial effort will see him do something else, it seems like he's not quite done with the characters yet.

Monday night in New York City, The New York Times assembled comedic collaborators Judd Apatow, Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd for an onstage conversation at the Times Center to discuss their new film, “This Is 40.” Though the Times has had an impressive selection of interview subjects throughout 2012 including Marion Cotillard, Gus Van Sant & Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, they promised they had saved the best for last. For comedy nerds in the audience, this was definitely true. While each member of this creative family (or in Apatow and Mann’s case, actual family) have done work outside the group, they’re all probably best known for their work together: Apatow and Rudd (“Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy”), Apatow and Mann (“Funny People”) and the full trio (“The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up”) have all made at least a pair of classics together, no matter which configuration you choose.

Review: Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40' Is Sprawling And Undisciplined, But Emotionally Honest Too

Hearing that writer/director Judd Apatow, arguably the most influential and highly regarded comedic talent in the past decade, was making a "sort-of sequel" to his smash "Knocked Up," it's easy to assume that his creative well has run dry. Why return to that world, only to focus on a pair of side characters (played by Paul Rudd and Apatow's wife, Leslie Mann), especially when Apatow seems particularly fascinated by the interpersonal relationships between modern day fuck-ups, which provide a nearly endless canvas to paint on. But that "sort-of sequel" is anything but an eager cash-grab or a creatively bankrupt ploy; Apatow is genuinely invested in these characters and scenarios. One of the main problems is that it's an unfocused movie without a narrative rudder; a collection of funny observations about marriage and family without much connective tissue or momentum in an ultimately small stakes story. Apatow indulges in his freeform tendencies to a particularly destructive degree with "This is 40," resulting in a movie whose ambitions are only equaled by its shortcomings.

This Christmas, stepping into middle age isn't going to go smoothly, at least not for Pete and Debbie in Judd Apatow's "This Is 40." The quasi-semi-sidequel-spinoff to "Knocked Up" reunites Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann in their roles, but fast fowards to find them both approaching the big four oh. And as usual, Apatow's loose, collaborative and improvisational style, helped him piece together the film.

After the comprehensive onslaught of attributed projects for which his name lies above the title, it then remains a rare and welcome sight to see Judd Apatow return for his fourth directorial effort, “This is 40.” Last seen in 2009 with “Funny People,” Apatow has now expanded his cinematic universe with his latest film to focus on Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), two supporting characters from “Knocked Up” who return saddled with a host of unexplored issues.

The messiness of family and all its glory is front and center in Judd Apatow's upcoming dramedy, "This Is 40." The "sort-of sequel" to 2007's "Knocked Up," this more grown-up comedy expands on the family in the film played by Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann and the kids Maude and Iris Apatow. ''People really responded to Pete and Debbie, and I thought it would be fun to see where they are now,'' Apatow told EW recently. ''I come from television, so I want there to be 80 episodes of everything.''

The red band trailer usually delivers nudity, foul language and all kinds of other stuff they can't show general audiences without some concerned parent gasping at the horror of it all. This one for "This Is 40" has none of those which leaves us asking why it was designated with that tag. Was it Paul Rudd's anus? The use of the word 'dicks'? The suggestion that Megan Fox isn't wearing any undewear? We're sure the stuffed shirts at the MPAA have their reasons, but anyway you can check out the not-so-naughty work below.

After the disappointing box office returns of 2009’s “Funny People," Universal is pulling no punches in making sure that everyone knows that “This Is 40” is a (quasi) sequel to Judd Apatow’s earlier hit “Knocked Up.” To that end, here are two featurettes from the film along with another listen to a song from the soundtrack.

Turning forty (or even passing through your mid-thirties) means seeing your once youthful body morph into a lumpy, misshapen thing that is no longer as tolerant of the excess of years past. And so, for Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), when Desi (Megan Fox) walks into their lives, it's easy to see why they both pay attention.
