Masters Of Sex
If you're like me, you're probably way behind on way too many shows already. I was a big fan of the first season of "Masters Of Sex," a terrifically entertaining drama that's smarter than the title suggests, and genuinely moving at times too, led by the pretty great pair of Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen (not to mention the show has earned three Emmy nominations, a nice surprise). But summer is here, I'm way too busy with a million other things, and last night I just couldn't catch up with the start of season two. But thankfully Showtime is making it easier for me (and everyone else) to get caught up.

One of our 20 Best TV Shows Of The 2013/2014 Season, Showtime's "Masters Of Sex," is certainly one of the most intriguing dramas going on television right now. While the premise could easily have been pushed in a tawdry direction, the first season turned out to be something far richer, with Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan leading an array of complex characters, with varying relationships and attitudes to sex. And it says something about how much consideration is given to the supporting characters that Allison Janney got one of the most moving and heartbreaking arcs of the entire first season. And so, needless to say, we're stoked for season two.

Actors Deserving Emmys, Summer 2014
We're having a sustained and much needed break from the Oscars, but that doesn't mean that awards are completely banished from the cultural landscape. For better or worse, Emmy season is sneaking up. The biggest and most prestigious TV awards in the calendar ended their qualifying season at the end of May, and ballots opened only a few days ago, with voting set to finish next week, ahead of the announcement of nominations on July 10th (with the awards themselves following on August 25th).

Seven year on from his anointment as a movie star with "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" (and fifteen from his first appearance on screens in "Freaks & Geeks," and Seth Rogen is still riding high. Sure, there have been moments when his projects didn't work out ("The Green Hornet," "The Guilt Trip," but for the most part, he's continued to make smart choices, and particularly in the last couple of years, as he's taken his career more into his own hands (and those of writing/producing/directing partner Evan Goldberg), and set out to make lower budget movies that have turned out to be hugely profitable, as well as critically acclaimed.

To say "Freaks & Geeks" launched a lot of careers would be an understatement, but one only has to look at the talent in front and behind camera—Judd Apatow, Paul Feig, James Franco, Martin Starr, Linda Cardellini, Busy Phillips, Jason Segel and many more—to know it was a very special place to be at the time. Indeed, all the talent has cross-pollinated in other projects since, but two familiar faces haven't been seen together on screen since then: Seth Rogen and Lizzy Caplan. Granted, Caplan popped up in a single episode of "Undeclared," but it seems destiny didn't want them paired up again ... until now ...

We're sure the upcoming "Masters Of Sex" has the noblest of intentions, but we're also pretty sure the suits at Showtime were happy to have a program that will undoubtedly be a nudity fest (because, ratings), and have it all be in the name of telling the story. Putting the smuttier aspects aside, this 3-minute trailer for the upcoming show actually positions itself as a pretty intriguing looking drama about the intersection of love, sex and science.

We love Lizzy Caplan, but then who doesn’t? It’s pretty hard not to. She was awesome in one of the best comedies of the last decade (“Mean Girls”), similarly awesome in one of the best sitcoms of the last decade (“Party Down”), and has continued to impress in interesting projects ever since. We’re looking forward to seeing her alongside another favorite of ours, Michael Sheen, in Showtime’s intriguing looking “Masters of Sex” later this year. But today we have an unexpected bonus dose of Caplan with the online short, “Fashion Film.”

Review: 'Save The Date' Is Light & Endearing Without Being Insubstantial; What Other Rom-Coms Should Aspire To Be

With the countless number of romantic comedies focused on how difficult it is for a woman to find a good man, it’s incredibly refreshing to see one where the tables are turned. In “Save The Date,” Lizzy Caplan stars as Sarah, a struggling illustrator who keeps herself afloat by managing a local bookstore. After dating her boyfriend Kevin (Geoffrey Arend) for two years, she has hesitantly agreed to move in with him to take their relationship to the next level. Kevin is the singer in a two-man indie band called Wolf Bird -- because all indie bands have Wolf in their name -- whose drummer Andrew (Martin Starr) is engaged to Sarah’s sister Beth (Alison Brie). Their first night as cohabitants looks like romantic bliss as the couple tenderly slow dances together, while Sarah warns that she will be a horrible roommate, messy and forgetful. Kevin is smitten anyway, and despite the warnings of friends that he may be moving too fast, he hatches a plan to propose to Sarah during the final Wolf Bird concert before he embarks on a nationwide tour. But his spur-of-the-moment gesture goes horribly awry and Sarah storms out, leaving the entire embarrassing incident captured on YouTube.

A comedy centered on two very different sisters, featuring a solid cast including Lizzy Caplan, Alison Brie, Martin Starr, Mark Webber, Melonie Diaz, Geoffrey Arend and Timothy Busfield, the Sundance rom-com "Save the Date" has been rather quiet since it premiered in Utah earlier this year. But IFC Films, releasing the picture later this fall, is finally bringing their campaign to life. Directed by Michael Mohan ("One Too Many Mornings") the first trailer for the film has arrived and it quotes our review from Sundance where we described it as an "endearing" picture that "other rom-coms should aspire to be." And indeed, it does look charming while still containing some emotional depth and smarts.
