Frank, Sundance
An unexpected little treat has arrived on the eve of SXSW: the trailer for “Frank,” one of our favorite films from the Sundance Film Festival. Starring Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scott McNairy, “Frank” is a wickedly funny yet poignant look at outsider art, misfits, freaky rock n’ roll and more. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson (“What Richard Did”), the film is loosely based on the story of Chris Sievey, aka Frank Sidebottom, an English musician who became notorious for always wearing a giant papier–mache head whenever he played live.

River of Fundament
Before anything: brass tacks. Matthew Barney's new film “River of Fundament” features a number of taboo-breaking, provocative scenes. They are unsimulated and shot in close-up, rubbing your face in their shock value. I could give you a list of 25 such moments, but we’ll stick with three.

Frank, Fassbender
While the Sundance Film Festival seems like a distant memory, one film we can't stop talking about is "Frank." One of the best films we saw in Park City, and a definite highlight among our writers on the ground, the Michael Fassbender-starring musical comedy is a distinct, odd, unique and highly entertaining take on being a musician and the process of creating art. And now we've got a batch of new images to take you further inside the zany world of the movie.

Frank
Are some diamonds in the rough so special they can only exist on the fringes? When a rare species enters the ecosystem of the mainstream, does its fragile, sensitive needs break down amongst the polluted elements around it? These are some of the ideas expressed in “Frank,” an off-the-wall and terrific paean to the misfits and freaks of the world, their dreams, visions and togetherness.

With a movie called "White House Down," directed by Roland Emmerich, you pretty much know what you're going to get. Having already laid waste to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue twice before in "2012" and "Independence Day," Emmerich luxuriates in blowing up the national icon once again. Both wings and the main residence get shot up and bombed and rampaged, in addition to airplanes and helicopters getting shot out of the sky, SUVs flipping over and tanks obliterated. Emmerich doesn't miss a beat, and for bonus points, the Capitol Building comes crumbling down, with yet another Hollywood blockbuster lazily evoking 9/11 imagery for popcorn entertainment. And while some critics argue that "White House Down" satisfies whatever low, blockbuster bar Emmerich sets for himself, films this insipid and dumb do not deserve a pass just because they're "fun." While some may say that "White House Down" is self-aware of how extraordinarily silly it all is, the seriousness with which most of the cast plays it out, suggets otherwise.

Over the last few years, we've seen Michael Fassbender in a number of different guises; British agent disguised as a Nazi, Roman warrior, Gothic romantic lead, metal-bending Holocaust-surviving mutant, repressed psychotherapist, rampant sex addict, treacherous secret agent, and Peter O'Toole-ish android. But his next project promises to show him in a guise that we've never seen before from the Irish-German actor.

Well, you can put this on our list of movies we'll be keeping an eye out in 2013. A comedic rock biopic starring Michael Fassbender and two of this year's scene stealers Domnhall Gleeson ("Anna Karenina") and Scoot McNairy ("Killing Them Softly," "Argo")? Yeah, sign us up. And it looks like one more solid name is joining "Frank" as cameras are set to begin rolling soon.

After getting his ass handed to him by Gina Carano in "Haywire," being buds with Jonah Hill in "21 Jump Street" and shaking his money maker in "Magic Mike" in 2012, next year Channing Tatum is coming to save America. With her performances in “Doubt” and “The Help” both garnering her deserved Oscar buzz, actress Viola Davis quickly attached herself to another awards season hopeful, the education-reform drama “Won't Back Down.” Apparently 20th Century Fox believes so too, and along with moving the film's release date from the spring to fall, they've released a number of clips showcasing Davis' acting chops as well.
