The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2
Not all franchises are built for 18-24 year olds with disposable income and too much time on their hands. The quaint "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" was a sleeper hit a couple of years, earning over $135 million worldwide at the box office. Not bad for a dramedy with a bunch of middle-aged to elderly British actors. And so of course, a followup has been made, with new faces being brought into the fold including Richard Gere — but don't call it a sequel.

But now, nearly 35 years on, the legendary star has finally completed his debut directorial effort, "Quartet," an adaptation of the play by Ronald Harwood ("The Pianist").

Our Oscars coverage has, over the last few months, principally focused on the Best Picture race, which makes sense as what films look like possibilities continues to come into focus. But with the dust now settled on the festival season (well, except for the New York Film Festival getting underway today), we want to come in a little tighter, as it were, and start to think about the individual categories.
