What is it we do to survive? Who is it we love? Who is it we fight? What are the forces seen and unseen that push our lives in directions we could have never expected? These are the questions that Jacques Audiard tackles in his latest "Rust And Bone," a beautiful, moving story of two fractured lives that somehow, together, combine into a single (if unconventional) whole.

Spoilers ahead! Seriously, don't whine about anything if you read past this point. Anyway, if anything has matched the secrecy around "The Dark Knight Rises," it has been the rumors, with everyone on the Internet tossing around their ideas for just what Christopher Nolan will be bringing to the epic conclusion of his Batman movies. One of the most enduring so far is that Marion Cotillard's Miranda Tate, reported to be a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Many assumed that rather vague character description was a bit of misdirection, and that she could possibly be playing a villainess. Once Liam Neeson's cameo as Ra's al Ghul was rumored and later confirmed, many assumed Tate was going to be playing Talia al Ghul, looking to seek revenge (possibly with League Of Assassins). Well, according to Cotillard, the fanboys are wrong.

In just about a week and half, the red carpet will roll out, the tuxedos will be pressed and the dresses be fit as stars, press, film fans and celeb watchers will descend on the south of France for the Cannes Film Festival. Of course, we don't to tell you the lineup is remarkably strong this year and one of the many titles that folks are eagerly anticipating is "Rust And Bone."

While Jean-Baptiste Mondino might not be a household name, you've likely seen his work. A director and photographer, he's helmed music videos for a variety of folks like Madonna, David Bowie, Prince, Bjork and Tom Waits and recently got behind the camera for the Dolce & Gabbana ad featuring Scarlett Johansson. Mondino also worked extensively on campaign for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" for David Fincher, shooting the breast baring teaser poster as well as the memorable spread for Le Monde featuring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig dressed as their characters, but in new images not from the film.

The French adore James Gray. And we don't blame them one bit. With only four films to his name, he has already inspired a book dedicated his works, published by the France based Syecdoche Books (limited to 1000 copies, but it's bilingual and features interviews with Gray and the various actors he's worked with over the years). Thus, we're not entirely surprised that the first look for his upcoming "Low Life" would arrive not on a website, or in an American trade publication, but instead courtesy of Liberation, who also have the first profile on the film.

Now that Jacques Audiard’s “Rust and Bone” has been officially announced as part of the Cannes Film Festival lineup we can start to get a little bit more excited about it (as if we weren’t excited already). If Audiard delivers here, it could mark another fine effort after the one-two punch of “A Prophet” and “The Beat That My Heart Skipped,” and we’ve got high hopes for it as a result.

A new poster and a few more images have arrived in advance of the film's French release (courtesy of our pals at Cinema Teaser), and on top of the already stunning trailer, the movie is building up to be one of our most anticipated of the year.

In a competitive year that sees new films from Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Spielberg, Wes Anderson, David Cronenberg, Andrew Dominik, John Hillcoat and many others, there's one film that we've been quietly anticipating just as much, if not more: "Rust & Bone," the latest from Jacques Audiard, the man behind firecracker French crime pictures "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" and "A Prophet."

While the official Cannes Film Festival lineup won't be revealed until April 19th, Jacques Audiard's "Rust & Bone" -- slated for a May 17th release in France, one day after the fest opens -- is pretty much considered a lock. Regardless, with the movie now just over a month away from release, we're going to be seeing a lot more, and to kick things off is the first official still from the film.
