In case you've been living under a rock, or were somehow unaware, we hate to break it you: "Breaking Bad" is done this summer. The acclaimed, hit series wraps up the fate of Walter White in just a few months time, and after that, AMC will be left with a considerably big hole in their schedule that they'll need to fill. Could "Low Winter Sun" be the next show we're all going to be talking about?

The terms "British cinema" and "action movie" tend not to go together particularly well. Maybe it's the smaller budgets at play, maybe it's an awareness that our American and Asian cousins do it better, maybe it's cultural -- most British cops don't carry weapons, for example. It's not that it hasn't been tried, it's more that the examples we do have -- "The 51st State," "Centurion," "The Sweeney" -- tend to be bad enough to dissuade too many others from giving it a shot, and so the idea of an action movie set in the U.K. remains incongruous enough that it can form the central joke of an entire film, like Edgar Wright's "Hot Fuzz."

"Hot Fuzz" aside, the history of the British cop/action film is not a glorious one. Indeed, it's hard to think of a truly successful one that plays it straight, especially with recent disappointments like "Blitz" and "The Sweeney" fresh in the memory. But there's one sneaking up that we've had high hopes for for some time.

It was way back in the fall of 2011 when the trailer for Jean-Jacques Annaud’s “Black Gold” was released, as the film started to hit the festival circuit. Now, in 2013, the epic film is finally seeing a release in North America with the brand new (and somewhat bland) title of “Day Of The Falcon.”

Looking for the next candidate to fit into that British-indie-director-who-goes-A-list-Hollywood category? Someone to follow in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan, Rupert Wyatt, and "The Disappearance Of Alice Creed" director J. Blakeson? A strong contender is emerging in the shape of Eran Creevy, who made a storming debut with the microbudget "Shifty" a few years ago, a low-key drama that featured top-notch performances from Daniel Mays and Riz Ahmed, and oodles of filmmaking talent behind the camera.

Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer will star in the Michael Radford-helmed English-language remake of “Elsa & Fred.” Based on the 2005 Argentinian film, the remake will move its setting to New Orleans with “MacLaine as Elsa, a gregarious fun-loving retiree, who takes a shine to Plummer’s character, a stick-in-the-mud widower, Fred, who moves into her apartment building, but just wants to be left alone.” The film begins shooting this December in New Orleans and Rome.

The history of the British police movie is not a glorious one. Perhaps it's because (for the most part) UK coppers aren't allowed to carry firearms, which somewhat reduces the capacity for squib-happy action sequences. Or maybe it's the lack of glamorous locations for said shootouts, which can hardly compete with Manhattan or L.A. But after Edgar Wright imported the cop movie to rural Britain with "Hot Fuzz," we've seen a string of more straight-faced takes on the genre from the UK, including the Jason Statham vehicle "Blitz," '70s remake "The Sweeney," and the upcoming "Welcome To The Punch."

Get Oscar ready? We'll see, but any thoughts that this was going to be mostly just a bunch of guys in rooms looking at charts and maps is dead wrong. The brand new and meaty trailer for "Zero Dark Thirty" has landed, and it's pretty captivating stuff.

Where does Mark Strong find the time? Since his face first became widely recognizable back in 2005/6 it seems he’s rarely been away from our screens, and usually in a mixture of high profile films and acclaimed smaller efforts. And audiences across the pond know that in 2006, Strong was also making his last appearance on the British miniseries “Low Winter Sun,” and it looks like it may be the same material that’s tempting him back to the small screen six years later.
