Transformer: Age of Extinction
So what’s the deal with Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Age Of Extinction”? Is it a reboot or do over now that Shia LaBeouf is no longer part of the series? Apparently, the only rebooting Bay is doing is changing leads. The destruction of Chicago at the end of “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon” is still in play in the upcoming sequel, and the outcome of that disaster turned humanity against the Transformers, so now they’re all in hiding.

Transformers: Age of Extinction
Uh oh. Remember when Michael Bay said T4, aka “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” would likely be his last Transformers movie? Well, it still might be his last Transformers film, but the plan (like usual) is for another new trilogy.

While he'll be featuring in the self-described "biggest movie of 2014" with "Transformers: Age Of Extinction," the always busy Mark Wahlberg has a number of other movies percolating that are smaller and much more interesting (at least for us). And he's revealed the status of a few of them to the folks at Collider.

Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, Wahlberg and cast
This week CinemaCon kicks off in Las Vegas, and it's where studios go to show off the big movies to theatre owners, while continually assuring them everything is okay, everyone is going to make lots of movie, and audiences are going to continue to show up en masse for all the latest tentpoles. And naturally in this environment, it can lead to boasting and bragging as studios try to get everyone attending ramped up about their big shiny cinematic baubles. But Mark Wahlberg took it a whole other level.

Transformers: Age of Extinction
“It’s a bit more of a darker vision of the Transformers world… It’s not a kids movie, I’ll tell you that much,” Titus Welliver told Nerdist recently about "Transformers: Age Of Extinction," sending certain corners of fandom into a tizzy. But less reported was Welliver's subsequent clarification, which definitely wasn't written by studio publicists.

Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, skip
The cars might be new and the cast might be different—but under the hood, the engine is the same: director Michael Bay. And for his fourth go at the "Transformers" franchise, you can expect bigger and badder. But better?

Lone Survivor
Your average rock, tree, or branch will never appear harmless after “Lone Survivor.” With its depiction of warfare in Afghanistan moved to the unlikely setting of evergreens and jagged cliffs, the most horrific moments of director Peter Berg’s drama come from a body in free fall—and its eventual landing upon each. Never mind the fact that surrounding Taliban forces rain gunfire and RPGs down upon four injured American soldiers out on a recon mission; nature is the true enemy, and the extent of its cruelty is explored to the fullest over the course of the film’s harrowing two hours.

Lone Survivor
In the midst of this overcrowded month, it can be easy to lose track of all the films that are being released this holiday season. “Lone Survivor” looks to ease the situation by waiting until January before expanding to theaters nationwide. The Afghan-war film is based on the very real and tragic story of former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and stars Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, and Eric Bana. One of our own colleagues liked “Lone Survivor”, but had his reservations about the film when he caught it over at the AFI Film Fest. In his review, he called it “a deeply intense, detached museum piece” and praised Ben Foster’s performance for humanizing his character “with a full-spirited passion and sensitive humor.” Now, four new clips from the film have just been released to help paint you a picture as to what this movie will be about.

Lone Survivor
Peter Berg is a manly director. After shepherding such testosterone-soaked films as "Very Bad Things," "The Rundown," "Friday Night Lights," and "Battleship," the director has set his sights on bringing his passion project to the big screen, in spectacularly violent fashion. "Lone Survivor" is based on Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell's nonfiction account of how his elite unit was ambushed and fell in the rocky mountains of Afghanistan. As told by Berg, it is a film full of fire and fury and men doing incredibly manly things. We got a chance to speak to the director, who told us about pulling together his cast, what his thoughts on "Battleship" are more than a year later, the movie's patriotic tone, and more.

Cameron Crowe Beautiful Boy Mark Wahlberg
Cameron Crowe? Meth addict drama? For a director who is generally known for films that depict intimate relationships with comedy and heart (though "Vanilla Sky" is obviously an outlier), it seems like something you wouldn't immediately find in his wheelhouse. However, he's been trying to get "Beautiful Boy" made for a while now. Currently housed under Brad Pitt's Plan B shingle, the project has survived from scripting issues, and it was reported last year that it would roll next after Crowe's currently filming untitled comedy (formerly known as "Deep Tiki"). And it seems that may still be the case.
