Penny Dreadful
With his Oscar contender "Big Eyes" starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz coming soon, those who prefer Burton's more whimsical movies shouldn't worry. Early next year he's gearing up an adaptation of Ranson Riggs’ “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” and he's got his eye on a former collaborator for a role.

Jamesy Boy
Getting send up to prison is no picnic in the movies or in real life, but having someone on the outside waiting for you to get out can sometimes make that experience bearable. And for the titular "Jamesy Boy," he'll need that support as he tries to turn things around behind bars.

One day a studio will fund a $100 million plus tentpole, screen the finished version, and flat-out deem it un-releasable, unwatchable and unmarketable. Until then, we only have reminders that that day is coming, in the form of misguided boondoggles like “R.I.P.D.,” a picture that Universal is releasing in order to create a silver lining around a $130 million cloud. What’s horrifying is that this expensive misfire runs a little less than ninety minutes, which means that there’s likely a 105-110 minute long version that the producers hacked up in order to get the maximum amount of 3D showtimes to not embarrass the studio on opening weekend. Judging by the released product, that version is likely even worse, if such a thing were possible.

“Red 2” begins with a cool, comic-book-style credits sequence, paying a short homage to its Warren Ellis-penned roots. Too short, in fact. Just as we’re starting to get into the warmly hued titles, we’re thrown headlong into the live-action, high-stakes world of retired government agents...shopping at Costco. The film has numerous issues, but the most distracting is the inconsistent bursts of stylized animations, buried between unimaginative shots and sequences. They serve as setting transitions, announcing our heroes’ arrival in Hong Kong and Paris, but they’re oddly skipped when the former spies land in London and Teterboro. Well, we understand the lack of fanfare for the New Jersey town, but London? “Red” helmer Robert Schwentke was apparently too busy directing “R.I.P.D.” to make the follow-up, so Dean Parisot makes an unremarkable return with his first feature since 2005’s “Fun with Dick and Jane.”

The word retirement always seems like it’s on the lips of actors and directors. Both Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino have given their directorial skills an expiration date in the last year, proclaiming they’re prepared to leave the industry to try new creative pursuits and/or get out while they're still on top, and the newest player to wave the retirement card is “Red 2” and “R.I.P.D.“ star, Mary-Louise Parker. The 48-year-old star of Showtime’s hit “Weeds” recently expressed her desire to quit acting to Australian press.

Okay, we get why there's a sequel to "Red" -- it made just under $200 million worldwide. But seriously, do you remember anything about that movie? Have you been itching for a sequel? In what might be the most unnecessary sequel of 2013 (and yes, that includes "300: Rise Of An Empire"), "Red 2" is coming.

While we think the world of Jodie Foster, she always seemed to be a weird potential castmate of "R.I.P.D." but with Variety now reporting that Mary-Louise Parker will take the role instead, things make a lot more sense.
