If any of the major studios had the brass balls to take on "Behind The Candelabra," we think Michael Douglas probably would've been a no brainer as an Oscar contender, particularly judging by this new trailer unveiled over at The Guardian. It's a totally transformative performance and it looks like a total blast. While Douglas stuck with the project -- put on hold as he battled cancer and revived once he recovered -- and was open to all challenges the script brought with it, he did have his limits.

As we mentioned earlier today in our giant summer movie preview, "Elysium," Neil Blomkamp's eagerly awaited follow-up to his groundbreaking "District 9," is one of the movies we're most looking forward to this summer. Pitched between social commentary and sci-fi spectacle, the movie envisions a futuristic earth that's ruined and toxic, with the most powerful and wealthy humans living on an orbiting space station called Elysium. As two new photos from the movie show, Earth really has gone to hell.

As Steven Soderbergh prepares to take what he now describes as an extended break from filmmaking, he's leaving us with one last piece of film work, the glitzy "Behind the Candelabra." Tracking the tragic relationship between Liberace and his young lover Scott Thorson, it's another challenge for the filmmaker, one that finds him again in distinct territory, allowing him to draw on cinematic and pop cultural history, while creating something new or interesting within that context.

Elysium trailer
In case you missed it, yesterday evening Sony finally unveiled the long-awaited trailer for "Elysium," Neill Blomkamp's rather ambitious sci-fi follow-up to the dazzling and creative, "District 9." Starring Matt Damon and set in 2154, "Elysium" looks like a direct commentary on "the haves and have-nots." It's set in a future where the ruling class are on Elysium, an elite luxury space station above the planet, while the 99% are stuck on a ravaged and resource-drained Earth, both brutally overpopulated and polluted. And we've got to say: the trailer looks tantalizing and incredible, with some spectacular effects that point to some potential next-level shit.

"Elysium," the latest from "District 9" writer/director Neill Blomkamp, has finally been brought kicking and screaming into the public view, with the first trailer dropping last night. And the result? Looks pretty damn epic, no? But don't get too confident you've seen everything yet. Blomkamp likely still wants to keep some surprises in store, but a few more new images have arrived to give another peek at the sci-fi world being put together.

Matt Damon, Elysium
In case you haven't been on the internet in the past 24 hours, Sony has broken open the doors on Neill Blomkamp's until now secretive sci-fi "Elysium." Press got a dose of ten minutes of footage yesterday (read our breakdown right here), along with the trailer you're about to see below. And even more, Blomkamp talked up the movie, his desire for "Aliens"-style slime and eggs in his next movie and his thoughts on "Halo" and taking on pre-existing franchises already.

Sony Pictures are finally on the promotional path for "Elysium," the Matt Damon-starring sci-fi film, written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, the filmmaker behind "District 9." Like his Peter Jackson-produced debut, which was set in a post-apocalyptic future in Johannesburg, dealing with issues like apartheid, xenophobia, poverty and slums, "Elysium" also blends mind-blowing action and effects with social concerns and textures this time featuring a 1% elite upper crust on a space station, and the 99% social class on a overpopulated and over polluted planet Earth below.

Elysium, Alice Braga
After its buzz-ridden San Diego Comic Con appearance last year was swiftly deflated by a release change from this past March to later this summer, “District 9” director Neill Blomkamp’s sophomore sci-fi effort “Elysium” was in dire need of a resurgence of interest. Well, consider that challenge met, as on the eve of their premiere trailer debut, Sony screened about 10 minutes of the film to press and fans, and the results were nothing short of spectacular.

Elysium, Matt Damon
“Elysium,” Sony's heady sci-fi film directed by “District 9” helmer Neill Blomkamp is finally unveiling itself. Just last week, we called the film “cagey” and said it might have kept itself under wraps for almost too long. Evidently we were right and this was by design. Today, the studio unveiled the trailer and 10 minutes of footage to journalists in Los Angeles (a full report later), trotted out Blomkamp and stars Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley to speak to press and released a new poster as well.

Behind The Candelabra, Michael Douglas
Steven Soderbergh has never been one to resist a challenge (ie. a 12-hour adaptation of John Barth's "The Sot-Weed Factor"), and certainly, his long-developing biopic of Liberace, "Behind the Candelabra," faced its fair share of resistance. The director has been up front about major studios turning down the movie for being "too gay," but it seems it's going to be their loss. HBO has dropped a brand new trailer for the movie and it looks nothing short of great.
