The Monuments Men
"The Monuments Men" always felt like a worthwhile (if dicey) proposition: it's the true-life tale of a band of Allied art historians and curators who are dropped into occupied territory during the frenzied final moments of World War II, and their goal was simple and seemingly insurmountable. In the words of one character, they were to "protect what's left and find what's missing." Or, secure all of the bridges, artwork, and architectural treasures, while also locating notable works of art that had been stolen by the Nazis and returning them to their rightful owners. Considering how well traveled World War II movies are, it stood to reason that a different take would be welcome and somewhat tricky. Turns out it was even trickier than originally imagined and that for all of its best efforts, "The Monuments Men" remains an unwieldy, overtly sentimental (but still emotionally distant) epic.

The Monuments Men
Originally set for release last month, “The Monuments Men,” George Clooney’s latest directorial outing, was pushed back to February to make sure it was the best it could be. Now with the release mere weeks away, the men-on-a-mission film has unleashed a brand-new clip and two featurettes to lure you away from the Oscar nominees still in theaters.

Who doesn't want Batman and Jason Bourne in their movie? That's really the question when it comes to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, two of the most in-demand dudes and nice guys around town. And no doubt, Harvey Weinstein has been big boosters of the pair ever since getting behind "Good Will Hunting," and working with them on a handful of projects since. So perhaps it isn't surprising he wants to team them in a movie that would be fitting in with recent run of survival movies.

The Monuments Men
While the woulda/shoulda/coulda conversation about the awards potential for "The Monuments Men" will likely pop up again once reviews for the film start coming in, the bottom line is that it simply wasn't ready. Originally slated to arrive this month, George Clooney's WWII caper was pushed a couple of months so editing, effects and even the score could be finished in time without compromising quality. So with that caveat out of the way, and the production on schedule for a February release, a lot more is being shown off from the movie.

Interstellar trailer
So, is Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" gearing up to be the biggest blockbuster about agriculture ever? That's certainly the last word on it, as the always secrecy prone filmmaker hasn't let any details yet slip out about his movie.

While it won't be in the Oscar mix both because it won't be ready and for the fact that it's, as George Clooney calls it, "a commercial, non-cynical piece of entertainment," "Monuments Men" still has the kind of star power to attract a red carpet. Indeed, it will be making its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in just a couple of months. And with that in mind, a brand new overseas trailer has arrived.

Sleeper Ben Affleck Matt Damon
Once upon a time, about six years ago, an adaptation of DC Comics' "Sleeper" was being tossed around for the big screen. Warner Bros. were tentatively eyeing an incarnation that would've paired up director Sam Raimi, with Tom Cruise slated to star. Needless to say, it didn't come to pass and everyone kind of forgot about it. Well, "Sleeper" has awakened once again.

I'm Still Here, Affleck, Phoenix
It’s interesting to look back on “I’m Still Here,” the faux-documentary that Casey Affleck & Joaquin Phoenix co-conceived in the late aughts about the nature of fame and celebrity. Directed by Affleck, starring Phoenix, and released in 2010, the now notorious documentary was of course, a big put-on that rankled many, including David Letterman. But for almost two years, Affleck and Phoenix stuck to their guns with this cinematic prank: the actor playing the part of a disheveled and downward-spiraling actor completely out of control. The actor took character into the public sphere and the director stuck to the story that he was simply documenting Phoenix’s new career path into rapping (which climaxed with a bizarre and infamous David Letterman appearance, and then concluded with a denouement of the actor apologizing to the talk show host some 18 months later). Considering how committed they were to the faux-doc, it was an impressive media art-prank, but many didn’t see it that way and critics unfairly savaged the movie.

So why do celebrities like endorsing products? Well, Page Six's recent report is fairly instructive, as they reveal that Matt Damon got paid $150,000/second, or $3 million, for twenty seconds of work to feature in a new Nespresso spot with his good pal George Clooney.

The new shows this television season may have been a weak slate — Joss Whedon's “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” needs to up its freshly-renewed game, while the less said about Seth McFarlane's “Dads” the better — but as always in Hollywood, there are plenty of potential replacements waiting in development, and now a massive batch of new comedy projects with promising talent has been announced.
