Elysium
If you've been wondering who wins out when a director would prefer to keep things under wrap versus a studio who wants to make sure people show up in theaters....let this new nearly four minute long extended trailer for Neill Blomkamp's "Elysium" answer that question.

Elysium, Matt Damon
As the last piece of big, expensive blockbuster entertainment before the summer is out, hopes are riding high that Neill Blomkamp's "Elysium" can deliver something of a bang to go out on, as the season thus far has been fairly disappointing. "District 9" proved that the director could marry brains and brawn with pretty spectacular results, and the anticipation is that he can do the same here.

Summer tentpole season is nearly over and while we’re not sad to see it go, that doesn’t mean we can’t muster enough excitement for one last blockbuster. Neill Blomkamp’s “Elysium” opens in theaters in a couple of weeks and the studio has released an action-packed new clip through EW.

Elysium Matt Damon
So, is "Elysium" the last blockbuster of the summer worth looking forward to? It's the certainly the only left this writer kinda cares about in any real way, and though Neill Blomkamp tends to keep the curtain closed on his movies until the last moment. It looks like Sony is getting ready for the last push in hopes to ride out the summer on a high.

10 Actor/Director Collaborations
The hallowed halls of cinema are littered with iconic and unforgettable director/actor collaborations. The muses that feed the filmmaker, the director that inspires the actor. Woody Allen and Diane Keaton, Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune, Ingmar Bergman and half his repertory including Bibi Anderson, Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow, Werner Herzog and his toxic relationship with Klaus Kinski, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Monica Vitti and Michelangelo Antonioni, Spike Lee and Denzel Washington, Alfred Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart—no matter what time period of movies you look at, no matter whether it be high or low art, the classic collaborations are countless.

With two major blockbuster flops in two years (“John Carter,” “The Lone Ranger”), the conventional wisdom follows that Disney is probably not green-lighting any major, untested would-be franchises anytime soon (even the the trio behind “The Pirates of The Caribbean” films, Bruckheimer, Depp and Verbinski proved nothing’s a sure thing). And so eyes immediately turned to David Fincher’s ambitious $200 million-plus, 3D tentpole adaptation of “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.” Given the recent announcement that Fincher would be directing the thriller “Gone Girl” with Ben Affleck this fall, we assumed the Jules Verne project had been scrapped, for the simple reason that Disney is not going to bankroll a potentially risky project.

Matt Damon, Elysium
Is "Elysium" the last blockbuster worth looking forward to this summer? The verdict is in on "The Lone Ranger" and it's not good, "Pacific Rim" is still a very big question mark and "The Wolverine" at this point looks only marginally better than 'Origins' at best. Can Neill Blomkamp send us out of the season with a bang?

Matt Damon has always kept his hometown of Boston close to heart, whether in the breakout "Good Will Hunting," taking a role in "The Departed" or developing a movie with Ben Affleck about the city's most famous criminal figure, Whitey Bulger. And should it all work out, Damon will once again help tell a story about his hometown, one that shook the city to its core.

The battle to keep surprises in store for an audience versus the need for mass marketing a major tentpole can be a tricky balance, but so far this year it seems studios are wising up. "Iron Man 3" and "Man Of Steel" both had extensive campaigns, yet kept big twists and plot developments under firm lock and key while stoking excitement for these franchise movies. And while we wait to see if Fox pulls a "Prometheus" and eventually ruins "The Wolverine," Sony is showing off a bit more of Neill Blomkamp's original tentpole (a rarity) "Elysium" with a brand new trailer.

So, we're at the midway point of the summer blockbuster season, with "Man Of Steel" set to hit theaters this weekend. But there is plenty more spectacle to come with Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim" stomping into theaters next month, "The Lone Ranger" galloping into cinemas, "World War Z" ready to unleash holy hell, and "The Wolverine" bearing his claws soon. And one more hoping to bring the sizzle to the multiplex BBQ is Neill Blomkamp's "Elysium."
