Let's rewind to the year 2000 -- Matt Damon was coming off an impressive string of films including "Good Wll Hunting," "Rounders," and "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Meanwhile, many were looking forward to seeing what Billy Bob Thornton would deliver next following his breakout directorial debut "Sling Blade." So when both were working together on an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "All The Pretty Horses," expectations were high. But the result was a classic story of studio interference clashing with artistic vision.

In case you forgot, "Zero Dark Thirty" isn't the only topical drama hitting theaters this month. Right before everyone gets wasted on New Year's Eve, "Promised Land" will hit theaters, a drama set against the backdrop of a tumbling economy, and the promise of financial gains through the controversial method of extracting natural gas known as fracking. It will be the last awards season player to hit theaters, but before it comes out near you, seven clips have arrived to give you a taste.

Not to rehash every nitty gritty detail in the failed attempt at a fourth Jason Bourne movie starring Matt Damon, and a third directed by Paul Greengrass, but 'Bourne 4' seems to have had a lot of people try and fail to crack the story (maybe because it was more or less resolved with "The Bourne Ultimatum.") Back in the fall of 2009, it emerged that two people were writing scripts for the project, George Nolfi ("The Adjustment Bureau," 'Ultimatum') who was the preferred choice of Damon and Greengrass, and newcomers Josh Zetumer ("RoboCop") hired at the behest of Universal. You can read the long version of the story here, but the short version is that neither took off, the project collapsed: fast-forward three years and we got "The Bourne Legacy." But it seems Damon didn't give up.

"It went incredibly well, I'm really proud of it. It's a wonderful movie," Matt Damon recently told us about Steven Soderbergh's final (for now) film, "Behind The Candelabra." And with the wheels in motion for a Cannes Film Festival premiere next May, HBO is beginning a slow roll of promotion.

They had fun at the multiplex with the 'Ocean's' trilogy of movies, made a topical movie together with "Syriana," Damon popped his head into Clooney's directorial debut "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," and Clooney produced Steven Soderbergh's excellent and underrated "The Informant!" starring Damon. And now, the helmer is re-upping Damon for what will hopefully be a substantial role in his next effort behind the camera, which has all the makings for a big piece of Oscar cheese.

Last time Matt Damon, star of the original 'Bourne' trilogy, was out doing press, he said he hadn't seen "The Bourne Legacy," this past summer's extensive reboot of the franchise that placed Jeremy Renner at the center of the action. The film upped the franchise's science-factual underpinnings by having Renner's character (part of the next generation of government-sanctioned killers) controlled by a series of drugs that would boost his reflexes and intelligence. When we spoke with Damon about the sequel/prequel yesterday, during the actor's press rounds for the upcoming "Promised Land," he did confirm that he's seen the movie but said that it might make it harder for him to re-enter the franchise.

Anti-fracking screed or portrait of small town America trying to survive in today's topsy-turvy economy? Maybe both perhaps, but there's no doubt that when Matt Damon and John Krasinski's "Promised Land" arrives at the end of the year, it will spark many discussions .
