Sam Riley Joins Michelle Williams In 'Suite Francaise'; Ray Winstone Joins Sean Penn In 'The Gunman'

Actor Sam Riley has been progressing up the ranks after his break-out performance in the 2007 biopic
“Control” and his more recent turn in "On The Road." With a starring role alongside Angelina Jolie in “Maleficient” next summer, Riley has
jumped aboard the Weinstein Company’s adaptation of Irene Nemirovsky’s book, “Suite Francaise.”
Set in WWII, the project recently acquired leading lady Michelle Williams, on top of a cast that already
includes Kristin Scott Thomas as Williams’ mother. The story follows a French woman (Williams) who
falls in love with a German officer (played by Matthias Schoenaerts). The cast is a fine assortment of
indie darlings and past Oscar contenders who could give it strong legs for awards consideration next year.
Production is set to start later this summer for a release next year. [Deadline]

Now, before you get too hot and bothered and excited -- nothing is confirmed just yet, this is a lot of best case scenario stuff, but if it works out? Damn. As you'll recall, last fall it was reported that "The Hunt" and "Celebration" director Thomas Vinterberg was gearing up an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's "Far From The Madding Crowd," and was eyeing Carey Mulligan to star. Well, her name is still in the mix and two more actors are being tossed around to join her.

Over a storied and celebrated career, actor Bruno Ganz has logged time with a handful of famed filmmakers including Eric Rohmer, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders and more, and is perhaps best known for his roles in international hits like "Wings Of Desire" (directed by the latter) and "Downfall." And now, it looks like he's found another role that could gain him all kinds of attention thanks to nothing more than some good timing.

One could argue there's nothing subtle about the movies made by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, the director behind "Oldboy," including the celebrated 'Vengeance Trilogy' and the loopy vampire movie, "Thirst." Violence reigns in his films, cameras pirouette like self-conscious characters in his ensemble, and style is king. But in the past, especially in "Oldboy" and "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance," his penchant for the outrageous and over-the-top always included sublime, comically brutal and sometimes even emotionally devastating conclusions that could leave the jaw agape. Style was always in service of a story and characters.

2013 stands to potentially bring three South Korean filmmakers' names into the mainstream American fold; a move notable not just from the three auteur's common land, but for placing their distinctive visions in an entirely new realm. With Kim Ji-Woon already delivering his Arnie action throwback, “The Last Stand,” and Bong Joon-Ho's “Snowpiercer” dropping later this year, the strange middle child is up next, in the twisted, baroque form of Park Chan-Wook's “Stoker.”

While "Stoker" earned its fair share of admirers at the Sundance Film Festival last month, our own man on the ground was less impressed -- he called it “overwrought and tonally poisoned.” You'll soon be able judge for yourself as Park Chan-wook’s English-language directorial debut is set to open in limited release this weekend. Some brand new images and a brand new clip have appeared from the film, and now you'll also be able to listen to composer Clint Mansell's entire score.

When “Stoker” premiered at Sundance last month, reactions to the film were mixed, to say the least. Our own man on the ground was certainly not very fond of the Park Chan-wook film, calling it “a brutally empty, deeply unfortunate movie.” Of course, those who have been really looking forward to the film will get to see for themselves with its theatrical release being just one week away. Until then, a new clip and featurette has just been posted online to tide you over.

To be certain, there is nothing reserved about Park Chan-Wook's upcoming "Stoker." One of the most talked about movies at the Sundance Film Festival, the Hitchcock-ian thriller is making its way to cinemas very soon, and a new clip from the film highlights both its distinctive aesthetics and mood all in one scene.

Though he spent the most of his early career bouncing around from bit part to bit part, Kyle Chandler finally caught people’s attention for his starring turn as Coach Taylor in the small-screen adaptation of “Friday Night Lights.” Since the series ended, Chandler has worked with directors like J.J. Abrams, Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow and Martin Scorsese, with another auteur now lined up.

With Park City now left to the ski bunnies hitting the slopes before it all melts away, the Sundance Film Festival is fading into memory. But one movie that continues to generate chatter is Park Chan-Wook's "Stoker." The bottom line is, you're either with the highly stylized and somewhat over-the-top melodrama....or you're not, and there doesn't seem to be much middleground. Indeed, our own man at the fest was decidedly not a fan, calling the whole endeavor "a garish misfire." But the rest of us will be able to make our own assessment in just a few weeks.
