Last night, Park Chan-wook's highly anticipated English-language debut "Stoker" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and reaction was mixed to say the least. While the film earned praise, some didn't take to the Hitchcockian thriller, and certainly our man on the ground in Park City didn't like it. At all.

One could argue there's nothing subtle about the movies made by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, the director behind "Oldboy," including the celebrated Vengeance Trilogy and the loopy vampire movie, "Thirst." Violence reigns in his films, cameras pirouette like self-conscious characters in his ensemble, and style is king. But in the past, especially in "Oldboy" and "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance," his penchant for the outrageous and over-the-top always included sublime, comically brutal and sometimes even emotionally devastating conclusions that could leave the jaw agape. Style was always in service of a story and characters.

Although it’s set for limited release later this spring, we’re going to start to see the first reactions to Park Chan-Wook’s English-language debut “Stoker” when it premieres this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. But if you can't be there, in advance of its world premiere, Hitfix has some exclusive new images from the film.

Paul Bettany & Matthew Goode: two talented British actors and veterans of both rom-com ("Wimbledon," "Leap Year") and terrible comic book movies ("Priest," "Watchmen"), in search of a boost to the next level. Things are already looking up for both; Bettany impresses in new cop thriller "Blood," and Goode looks to have a juicy role in Park Chan-Wook's "Stoker" early next year. And now the pair are teaming up for the Falklands War-era thriller "Destroyer." Based on the sinking of the HMS Coventry at the end of the 1980s conflict between the UK and Argentina, it's directed by Tom Shankland ("The Children," "The Fades"), and shooting gets underway early next year.

After an almost unbearably long wait, with cameras first rolling a year ago, we now have our first footage from "Oldboy" director Park Chan-wook's English-language debut "Stoker," and yes, it looks pretty damn great.

His name might be pretty much unfamiliar to all but the most fervent Anglophiles, but Stephen Poliakoff is something of a legend among British writers. He started his career as a playwright in the 1970s, before moving into television, which has hosted the bulk of his work, followed by feature films like "Hidden City" and "Close Your Eyes," with Alan Rickman and Clive Owen. Poliakoff's consistently idiosyncratic, often oblique dramas have become a brand in to themselves, making him one of the few writers who can continually bring in huge audiences for serious, adult television when it airs on the BBC.

Here's an interesting TIFF title: Jonathan Teplitzky's semi-autobiographical "The Burning Man," which stars Matthew Goode as a successful chef at a Bondi Beach restaurant who reacts to personal tragedy with reckless behavior and an inability to connect with his 8-year-old son as a number of women in his life try to save him.

The announcement of new projects from some directors are greeted in The Playlist's headquarters with a robust cheer. These days, the announcement of a new film from writer-director Neil LaBute musters nothing more than a groan and an immediate game of 'pick the short straw' to see who has to go and review the damn thing. The playwright-turned-director started strongly, making Aaron Eckhart a star with "The Company of Men," and followed it with the flawed but interesting "Your Friends and Neighbors" and the decent "Nurse Betty."
