Leonardo DiCaprio Wolf Of Wall Street
We've somehow struggled, so far, to get excited for "The Wolf Of Wall Street." Maybe it's that we've started to take Martin Scorsese for granted -- his last few films, in "The Departed," "Shutter Island" and "Hugo" were all highly entertaining, but perhaps not up to the gold standard of the very best of his work. Perhaps it's that the film seemed to mine, on paper, territory already well-trodden by films like "Wall Street" and "Margin Call." Or maybe we're just tired.

Matthew McConaughey must be thinking, "What on Earth do I have to do?" The actor stormed back into critical and audience hearts last year by putting on his shirt, dropping the romcoms, and showing that he's damn fine actor by delivering a fantastic performance in Steven Soderbergh's "Magic Mike," a subtle and solid appearance in Richard Linklater's "Bernie," and a wonderfully hilarious and sleazy turn in William Friedkin's "Killer Joe." The former was even a massive box office success, that was also met with great reviews. The result? He was snubbed for a much deserved Oscar nomination. This year, he's again revelatory in Jeff Nichols' beautiful fable "Mud" (one of the best of the year) but his next true Oscar shot will likely come with "The Dallas Buyer's Club."

Matthew McConaughey, Mud
It all starts with a beautifully surreal image: a decrepit boat resting comfortably in the branches of a tree. The young boys who find it want to use it, make it their own. But on this particular river island in Arkansas, they are not alone. It's not long before they encounter Mud (Matthew McConaughey, sporting a large snake tattoo and a chipped front tooth a la Jim Carrey in "Dumb & Dumber"), who's not only the namesake of Jeff Nichols' brilliantly constructed, emotionally satisfying genre deconstruction, but also the film's hero and anti-hero.

For audiences and especially filmmakers, there is an aspect of deflated confusion in an actor’s misled sacrifices for an underwhelming film -- just ask Jared Leto in his role of Mark David Chapman in “Chapter 27.” Luckily, with the 2012 that Matthew McConaughey had, which saw “Bernie,” “Magic Mike,” and “Killer Joe,” that sort of fate for his AIDS drama “The Dallas Buyers Club” is unlikely, and now seems even more unlikely with the arrival of some welcome distribution news.

So, where are we in the Matthew McConaughey renaissance? Well, we've seen the man turn the tide of public perception and expectation so far in Richard Linklater's "Bernie," William Friedkin's "Killer Joe," Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy" and Steven Soderbergh's "Magic Mike." Up next is the AIDS drama "The Dallas Buyer's Club," and if all goes well, Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar." But before both of those, McConaughey has yet another unique indie on the way.

Yeah, we know, offer stories are kind of the worst in some ways, but considering that Christopher Nolan keeps everything inside a vault inside his own mind (see what we did there?) any morsel regarding his projects is one we'll take a bite of, so here we are. And here you are, too. Onward...

The Matthew McConaughey renaissance continues (or as he has been calling it in interviews, “a McConaissance” – no, seriously) and we’ll see him next in Jeff Nichols’ highly anticipated third feature “Mud.” The movie played at Cannes last year and Sundance a few months ago, and it gets its theatrical release on April 26th, and as it heads to SXSW we’re getting a look at two new pictures and a Mondo poster.

As part of our steady quest to go cold turkey from the Oscar season over the next few days, we've been running down some of our possibilities for the films that will be elbowing each other for awards in 2014. Yesterday, we looked at Best Picture, and today, we turn to Best Actor, won this year by Daniel Day-Lewis.
