Watch: Martin Scorsese’s Dolce & Gabbana Ad With Scarlett Johansson & Matthew McConaughey; 'Wolf Of Wall Street' Wins First Award

If we had half the organizational skills of Martin Scorsese, we'd probably get a lot more done. Even with a deadline looming to deliver his nearly 3-hour ode to Wall Street debauchery "Wolf Of Wall Street," a looming gig as the president of next month's Marrakech Film Festival, not to mention countless producing gigs, running his World Cinema Foundation and finding the time to eat and sleep, Scorsese has just dropped a two-and-a-half-minute director's cut of his Dolce & Gabbana ad. And it's actually pretty lovely.

Movie Stars /Career Resurrections
This week “The Dallas Buyers Club” opens (you can read our review here), and it features a riveting, committed, physically gruelling and very likely-to-be-Oscar-nominated performance by Matthew McConaughey. If he is nominated, however, McConaughey will be at least a little in debt to the buzz that’s surrounded him of late as the newest member of what we could call the Comeback Club—that rarefied group of people who have, sometimes on a dime, turned their movie careers around and breathed new life into what was once moribund. It takes a great deal of luck to pull off this trickiest of acts, and for every actor who’s managed to hang onto their newly regained spot on top of the pile for a few years, there are ten who’ve briefly clambered all the way up only to topple off again a moment later.

Dallas Buyers Club
It's 1986, just months after Rock Hudson's death brings AIDS to its biggest public attention yet, but as far as Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey) is concerned, the real tragedy is the number of Hollywood babes the legendary actor could've easily bedded if he was straight. Along with cocaine, booze and whatever else can give him a good time, sex is an addiction for the Texas man, who seems to have been born with a cowboy hat on his head, a Budweiser in his hand and one eye constantly on the opposite sex. He's a good ol' boy and hustler, playing for and betting on anything. His rundown trailer is merely where he lays his head between the bar, his work as an electrician and wherever else his adventures might take him. But lately he's been getting rail thin, coughing a lot and even passing out. It's only after a freak electrical accident on a work site that he winds up being seen by a doctor, and a brief high voltage jolt is the least of his problems. He's got HIV, and he's given 30 days to live.

Best Physical Transformations
As we move deeper into the awards campaign season, a glut of films with showy central performances are hitting our screens, “For Your Consideration” for Academy voters. Over the years it’s been the subject of many a comedy sketch that there are a few markers of an Academy-friendly role, and this week’s “Dallas Buyers Club” (you can read our review here) is pretty much lousy with with them: it’s based on a true story, deals with AIDS and features not one but two instances of actors undergoing rapid and dramatic physical transformation to play their parts.

A moody procedural, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cary Fukunaga ("Sin Nombre," "Jane Eyre") for HBO—that should pretty much explain why this is probably one of our most eagerly anticipated shows of 2014. But the fact that the trailers and teasers so far have looked even better than we could've dreamed is only making his an even more exciting prospect. And once again HBO has dropped yet another teaser, and damn, if this doesn't look like a knockout.

12 Years A Slave
... and here we go. Even though we're not even in November, and with two more months of movies and awards season contenders to come, the Gotham Independent Film Awards have announced their nominees for 2013. While this may be "the first major awards ceremony of the film season," the real accomplishment here is shining a light on the kind of well-made, acclaimed movies that will unfortunately be forgotten as the heavier hitters with more money behind them elbow their way to the Dolby Theater in February.

We're living in a time where there are some TV shows that we're looking forward to as much, and perhaps more, than many movies. And considering the talent that's crossing over to the small screen, and the freedom to tell provocative, rich stories that wouldn't work or be given the space to breathe in the studio system, perhaps it's not such a surprise. And certainly, "True Detective" is one show that's high on our Must Watch list for 2014 (and perhaps it'll take the place of "Breaking Bad" for addictive viewing).

As ever, all the Oscar categories look competitive even from this far out, but nothing is going to be a tougher fight this year than the Best Actor race. It's typically a harder slog than most categories -- ask John Hawkes, who missed the cut last year for "The Sessions," despite months of buzz and predictions -- but this year looks like something else entirely. It's still only October, with many of the major possibilities still to open, and a few still to be unveiled completely, and the line-up is stacked.

True Detective
Back in June, we caught the first glimpse of Cary Fukunaga's first foray into dramatic television with HBO's “True Detective,” and since then we had the opportunity to chat with the “Jane Eyre” director about both his vision for the project and two topnotch leads, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. “I saw a stark bland American landscape, and two really strong male voices,” he said. “That for me was kinda the drive, to get into the psychology of two men—one more of a philosopher and the other a non-critical-thinking man, and just to play with that world and observe.” Well now, we've got a much clearer look at exactly what Fukanaga described for the show, it's very clear that his vision will be making it to the small screen intact.
