Cannes Review: Sprawling, Uneven Crime Saga 'Blood Ties' Falls Short Of Epic Scope

If there is any movie this year at Cannes that is absolutely brimming with promise on paper, it's Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties." With an extended cast featuring Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Mila Kunis, Matthias Schoenaerts, Zoe Saldana, James Caan, Marion Cotillard, Noah Emmerich and Lili Taylor among others along with a script co-written by James Gray, one wonders how it could go wrong. And while "Blood Ties" isn't a disaster, it's certainly a mess, a sprawling crime saga that endeavours to evoke the great character-driven movies of the 1970s, but never quite lives up to its epic scope.

The Weinstein Company are carrying an impressive 2013 slate with "Grace Of Monaco," "August: Osage County," "Salinger," "Fruitvale," "The Butler" and "The Grandmaster" all dated, and "Snowpiercer," "Lowlife" and "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom" (hopefully) expected this year as well. And it seems they are looking ahead to 2014, as they've picked up a movie that already boasts a promising pedigree.

Earlier this year, we had heard that Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties" was nearing the finish line, and thus we included it on our list of films that may show up at the Cannes Film Festival. And perhaps this is a further indication that when the lineup is unveiled later this week, the French filmmaker's English language effort will be among the titles getting the red carpet treatment.

When we reached Matthias Schoenaerts by phone Friday afternoon, it was nearing 7 p.m. in Paris, and ceremonies for the César Awards were not too far from getting underway. But Schoenaerts remained unhurried. "I'm not at all dressed and ready and go. I just got out of the shower, and I like to take it easy and not rush anything," he said. But don't let his laid back attitude fool you. For anyone paying attention, the hard working actor's career has taken off like a rocket thanks to Best Foreign Film Oscar nominee "Bullhead" and this year's arthouse sensation "Rust And Bone" -- for which he would pick up a Best Newcomer award at the Césars later in the evening.

If you had told us a year ago that a Michael Haneke directed film about the death of an elderly woman would become a contender for Best Picture, Best Foreign Lanuage Film, Best Actress and Best Director at the Oscars, we would've said you were crazy. But the provocateur's difficult, but touching and human film has managed to resonate far and wide, and while France's César Awards have pretty much zero bearing on the Oscars, it's interesting to see that Haneke's work has been just as recognized.

While he stars in the Oscar-nominated short film "Death Of A Shadow," Matthias Schoenaerts got to celebrate early last night, as he took home the César Award for Best Newcomer for his fantastic performance in Jacques Audiard's "Rust And Bone." No doubt, the actor will have his fingers crossed for up-and-coming filmmaker Tom Van Avermaet on Sunday night where 'Death' will be hoping to take home a statue. But once the festivities are over, it will be back to work, and first up will be a reunion with his "Bullhead" director who first helped him break out on the international scene.

Persistence pays off it would seem. To date, celebrated actor Alan Rickman only has one feature film directing credit to his name, 1997's "The Winter Guest," and while we've yet to see a sophomore effort, it hasn't been for lack of trying. Rickman has had a couple of projects percolating over the years, but the one that he's stuck with has been "A Little Chaos." It looks like his determination has finally yielded some results, with two great actors on board and a start date in sight.
