Despite a fairly illustrious acting and directorial career back home, Gallic actor-writer-director Guillaume Canet is probably better known stateside simply as the partner of Marion Cotillard, even after the international success of his taut-thriller "Tell No One." That is all likely to change very soon, however, with Canet set to tackle his English-language debut, "Blood Ties."

Things are not looking good for Marion Cotillard. Set to lose a limb in "Rust And Bone," it seems even before that tragic mishap, she endures a bloody nose and lord knows what other emotional traumas in Jacques Audiard's promising "Rust And Bone." A new poster and a few more images have arrived in advance of the film's French release (courtesy of our pals at Cinema Teaser), and on top of the already stunning trailer, the movie is building up to be one of our most anticipated of the year.

In a competitive year that sees new films from Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Spielberg, Wes Anderson, David Cronenberg, Andrew Dominik, John Hillcoat and many others, there's one film that we've been quietly anticipating just as much, if not more: "Rust & Bone," the latest from Jacques Audiard, the man behind firecracker French crime pictures "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" and "A Prophet."

At least in this writer's eyes, one of the more intriguing Oscar nominations was that of Michael R. Roskam's latest film, "Bullhead," in the Foreign Language Film category. It seems like this branch of the Academy are much bolder when it comes to their nominations. Only a couple of years ago, Giorgos Lanthimos' "Dogtooth" received a nod, but we never would have thought Roskam's less-publicized, brooding character study would receive the same recognition.
