With cameras now rolling in Los Angeles on Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, the Thomas Pynchon adaptation "Inherent Vice," it was only a matter of time before we started getting a look at some of the cast in character. Anderson managed to keep things pretty quiet during the shoot for "The Master" in San Francisco, but with an ensemble this huge -- Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Katherine Waterston and Kevin J. O'Connor and possibly maybe Sean Penn -- there was probably no way to keep away the local paparazzi.

Back in 2012, “The Descendants” took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, and most people were probably surprised to see Alexander Payne (a previous winner for “Sideways” and nominee for “Election”) flanked by Dean Pelton from “Community” and that dude from “Club Dredd.” For the first time in Payne’s career he had not collaborated with his usual co-writer Jim Taylor, but instead rewritten a previously existing screenplay by the aforementioned Jim Rash and Nat Faxon (which was in itself an adaptation of a novel).

Things are certainly looking up for “The Descendants” screenwriters Nat Faxon and Jim Rash following their Oscar wins for adapting Kaui Kurt Hemmings’ novel into the excellent Alexander Payne film. They’ve got a few big projects brewing in an action-comedy with Kristen Wiig, another collaboration with Payne, and their directorial debut in the dramedy “The Way, Way Back” – which continues to build an impressive ensemble cast.

They may still not have the prestige of arch-rivals Pixar, but things have been looking up over at DreamWorks Animation of late. Once the home of poor CGI fare like "Shark Tale" and "Bee Movie," recent years have seen a new emphasis on quality rather (or at least in addition to) big names. 2010's "How To Train Your Dragon" was their best film to date, and last year even sequels "Puss In Boots" and "Kung Fu Panda 2" displayed more artistry than "Cars 2" did, picking up Oscar nominations for their trouble.
